kissakai Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 Hi A tsuba of no distinction but I wondered if the mei was real or just a poor attempt Image has been enhanced to try to highlight the mei and this was my best attempt No need to be kind although I know most of you shoot from the hip Grev UK Quote
Ford Hallam Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 Hi Grev have a look at those lines inside the walls of the various opening in the plate. They're actually very clear signs this piece is a cast copy and those lines are reproduced from the rubber mould that produced the wax model. sorry, fh Quote

That is what I also thought, but after a second look there could be some white wax (shoeshine?) in the openings. Grev, you can tell what that substance is, and I hope for you that Ford is wrong! christianmalterre Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Tetsunin! and not waxed with ibota-wax(like many Tsuba in Japanese collections are waxed)...but rather beewax like it seems... nice Tsuba!...typical work from this guy... Christian Quote
Brian Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Christian, Then how do you reconcile that with the obvious flashings that Ford has pointed out? I mean..just one or 2 would maybe be caused by wax deposits, but the closer you look, the clearer they appear on just about every opening. Hard to see them as anything else. Brian Quote
kissakai Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 Hi Thanks for the replies which were a lot better than I expected It only arrived a day before my post so I didn't notice the substance in the sukashi but it smells like bees wax Once I knew the mei I found another excellent post on this website that had an image of the mei and some further info Grev UK Quote
RocklockI Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Those lines are an interesting , as a bronze caster those lines (parting lines) are one of the things any caster is aware of ! It is ALWAYS easier to clean them up in the wax . If they are not cleaned up it must have been intentional ...for whatever reason . Even a fake caster would know to clean them up. Gary Quote
kissakai Posted August 6, 2014 Author Report Posted August 6, 2014 I cleaned out the cut-outs to better show the inside faces From looking at the mei in another post I see this as an authentic tsuba Why copy a tsuba of little interest with so little detail and the correct mei is so vague it can not be easy to copy Grev UK Quote
Brian Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 I hope I'm wrong, but I fear the cleaning only re-inforces Fords theory. Brian Quote
Soshin Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 Hi Grev UK, The inside surfaces look very strange not sure if it is cast or just the openwork is very damaged by rust. This would be a big red flag not to buy it if I was thinking about purchasing it. Seek advice before you buy. Quote
