echizento Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 A number of years again a computer program came out called TOSHOW, I was going through some of my old discs and found the copy that I had. However it doesn't work with Windows 7 or 8. Is this program still available and if so is there a fix so that it will work with Windows 7 and 8? Quote
Stephen Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 I have it on my XP, don't know if it would open if I was to send??? I still use it when looking up smiths, would be great to have on my laptop. Quote
echizento Posted August 2, 2014 Author Report Posted August 2, 2014 Yeah, it works on XP fine at least it did when I had it. But doesn't work on 7 or 8. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 Unless it isn't KO-TOSHOW, it should work. Quote
echizento Posted August 2, 2014 Author Report Posted August 2, 2014 It's a version from 1998 so it must not be compatible. Quote
Rich S Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 TOSHOW wouldn't work on Win 8.1, but did fine on my XP. I really miss it; such a useful program. If anyone finds a fix so it will work on 8.1, PLEASE let us know. I use to use it all the time. Rich S Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 Ron I have not heard from this program before but you can run programs in program compatibility mode in newer windows versions. Just right-click -> properties -> compatibility mode and choose anything upwards from Windows 95. Hopefully this will work on that program. Quote
echizento Posted August 2, 2014 Author Report Posted August 2, 2014 That's what I'm hoping for, a fix for either windows 7 or 8. Quote
Rich S Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 I just tried running ToShow using all the various compatibility modes available on Win 8.1 - none worked Let us know if anyone finds a fix. I wish Peter McCollum would do an updated version. BTW, there is a swordsmith search database at http://www.jssus.org/nkb/ It doesn't show up on their home webpage??? Rich S Quote
b.hennick Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 The Nihonto knowledge base (nkb) is there just click on the button labelled "research". I have kept an old PC just so that I can use TOSHO and a few of software goodies.4 Quote
echizento Posted August 2, 2014 Author Report Posted August 2, 2014 I've been trying the various compatibility modes but I still can't get it to work. It would have been nice to have it again, but at this point I don't know what else to try. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 There's answer, but not an easy one. First check out http://superuser.com/questions/472499/h ... -windows-8 to see if your computer & OS meet the specs to use the new Hyper-V VM (Virtual Machine). If so, just follow those instructions & you'll be able to run almost any 16-bit program under Windows 8.X. If you are running Windows 7, then browse to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... -windows-7 & install an old copy of XP under Windows Virtual PC. The caveat here is that you must be running Win 7 Pro or Ultimate, not Home.... But once you're able to set up an XP Virtual Machine under either OS, you can easily run any 16-bit program. I'm using Win 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, & Windows Virtual PC to run my very old (1993) version of a program that contains all of my 23,000+ contacts, so it's essential for me. Ken Quote
echizento Posted August 3, 2014 Author Report Posted August 3, 2014 I got windows 7 home, tried it anyway and it didn't work as you said it wouldn't. Quote
Jorgensen Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 You can have both windows 7/8 and XP installed on same machine and on boot choose which one you want to launch. So when you want to use TOSHOW you just boot up with Win XP... Its a possibility and easily done... Quote
Darcy Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 There are several VMs that should run XP on Mac and various Windows/Linux boxes. VirtualBox for instance should work. Quote
