kaigunair Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Was given a nice price that I couldn't refuse. Lumpy with yakite finish, nice even if turns out to be something else. The small sukashi seems to exhibit the same sunken work, but it is small so I could be seeing what I want to see. Don't have any books on me, so wondering how does the signature and work look to the experts. Thanks in advance. Quote
Henry Wilson Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Hi Junichi That tsuba looks familiar. Either I owned it once or I owned something very similar to it. The motif is of possibly stylised pine trees and water drops (rain or dew) and there seems to be quite a few of them floating around. I think conventional wisdom would say that it is not a "mainline Yamakichibei" (wouldn't get papers from NBTHK) but could be one of those Edo period workshop jobs. Out of curiosity is there a fold seem in the nakago ana? I am sure there are much more knowledge people lurking who will contact you possibly via PM to either confirm or contradict what I have written. Anyway I hope the information is of interest. It looks very nice and hope that the San Fran show is going well. Quote
Soshin Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Hi Henry W. and Junichi, Henry I think that it might be the tsuba I purchase from you a while back. It was "pinked" when I submitted it to the NBTHK. Still a really nice tsuba with great iron and I feel it dates from Momoyama Period or early Edo Period. When I sold it on eBay with full disclosure that it failed NBTHK shinsa because of a gimei it went to a collector in the UK. It must have made the trip across ocean again. Quote
Henry Wilson Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Hi David Yes, I think it is originally a Holbrook tsuba from Grey. It has a nice chocolate brown patina and feels silky in hand. Quote
kaigunair Posted August 2, 2014 Author Report Posted August 2, 2014 Well, seems to have passed through a number of good hands. Not sure if there is a fold, but will take better macro pics once the show is over. I'm poop'd and its only day 1... Quote
Henry Wilson Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 Junichi お疲れさま。 The fold might not be there. I could be getting mixed up with another tsuba Quote
Soshin Posted August 2, 2014 Report Posted August 2, 2014 Hi Junichi, Here is the tsuba that Henry sold to me that failed NBTHK shinsa back in 2011. I think it s different tsuba with the same openwork design. I hope this helps. Quote
kaigunair Posted August 2, 2014 Author Report Posted August 2, 2014 Hmmm, I wonder if the phrase "same same but different" would apply here. I think I see some possible difference in the hill/peninsula of the sukashi, and some variation of the nakago punch marks. If the one I the same, it lost a lower copper insert which is unfortunate.... Quote
Soshin Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 Hi Junichi, Would like to see better photos of your new tsuba when you get some free time. The iron looks good. Thank you. Quote
kaigunair Posted August 6, 2014 Author Report Posted August 6, 2014 Hi David, Will try to get so photos by the weekend in the sunlight. Darn work gets in the way. I guess I misread the post where you attached your website pictures. It seems the one from the show is different than the one you previously submitted? It may still be from the same hand that made yours, given the similarities. Anyhow, will work on getting better pics. Quote
kaigunair Posted August 8, 2014 Author Report Posted August 8, 2014 As promised, here are some pic under sunlight. Included some of my other references (i.e. has some sort of paper) for comparison: Quote
wbt Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 David, I still have the Tsuba you sold me and this is another one. Probably same or similar shop. Looks nice regardless. Regards, Brent Quote
Soshin Posted August 11, 2014 Report Posted August 11, 2014 Hi Everyone, From looking at all of the additional photos I agree with Brent. Thank you Junichi for taking all of the additional photos. Quote
