Nihonto962 Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 Hello to all, My name is Blaise and I am new to nihonto, as well as to this forum. I am considering purchasing the Tanto pictured in the attached files. To my eyes it looks quite nice, but what do I know? Any help with this is greatly appreciated! Thank you all for your time and expertise. ~Blaise R. Quote
Darcy Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 It looks like an osoraku zukuri tanto but I don't see the yokote. I can't read the mei with this level of clarity in the photo. It looks maybe gendai. Hard to say too much. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 Blaise, we could probably explain everything you're seeing on this tanto, but then what would you know? There are literally hundreds of terms that apply to Nihonto, but if you haven't spent any money on books, & done some studying, all you would be able to do is use the Web to look them all up, & you still wouldn't know anything useful about your blade. So as has been said many times by many people, go buy some books before buying a blade. You'll then have a good idea what you've bought, & will also get more blade for less money. Welcome to the forum. Ken Quote
Nobody Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Are you sure that the blade is Japanese origin? Quote
Peter Bleed Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Are you sure that the blade is Japanese origin? If this is Japanese it is of odd workmanship. Peter Quote

Knowing how the seller describes it and the price would be helpful. Quote
Brian Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Listen to Moriyama san, This one feels bad. It doesn't look Japanese. More like a Western made knifemaker's attempt. If it does turn out to be Japanese by some small chance, then it would still suffer from an odd shape and unusual hamon. Looks like it's made from one of the German or Japanese laminated steels. Stephen Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 direct over head shots would help, shooting down the blade so to speak, off sets it. also one with out the habaki. same for the mei Quote
sanjuro Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 I have all sorts of alarm bells going off over this 'tanto'. There's something about an Osoroku like sugata but with a hira zukuri blade that strikes me as odd. Not Japanese I think. Modern knife made to resemble a Japanese style perhaps? The hamon also gives me reason to pause. It would seem to be a copy of a polished down hamon of much earlier vintage. A shinto or shinshinto blade would have typically a much broader hamon with more activity surely? it just don't feel right. I could however be wrong, since I am far from all-knowing. Quote
k morita Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Hi, Nihonto962 Try to Google " CHAO-PO sword ". 朝 波 Quote
Brian Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Morita san, Is this another Paul Chen? Brian Quote
Nobody Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Before "朝波", I think that I can see Bugei (武藝) in the mei. Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 I believe that Moriyama san and Morita san are correct. To me that seems to be Bugei Wave tanto. Here you can see closeup on one: http://home.comcast.net/~waggoduck/Aikuchi-2.JPG and multiple pictures of one here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 9414985703 Not a real Japanese sword but among top production pieces coming from China. Bugei has discontinued this tanto. Quote
