Greetings,

 

The attached mei stumped me. I could only make out Muramasa and nothing else. I don't think this is a gimei attempt of the famous Muramasa line, but perhaps some unknown smith. Any help would be much appreciated as always. I believe this is a shinto blade, 28" nagasa. I don't have a picture of the suguta right now but will provide it tomorrow. Provided along with the nakago are some shots of the hamachi area showing a long yakidashi, the boshi, and some activities in between.

Moriyama San, is it possible that the blade was ordered by somebody else, and that Nishimura Masamichi made it? (There are three smiths signing 正路 listed in the 日本刀銘鑑 for example.)

Thanks Piers, I did not think that possibility. Now I think that your theory is more reasonable. Nishimura Masamichi may be the smith's name.
