I bought this today on ebay. The nakago was not shown as the seller didn't want to take the tsuka off and mess up the tsuka-ito. It seems to have good length (27.5" based on the seller's description of a 28" blade) and hamon. Good chance it will be star stamped. I have a fair idea of who might have made it but wanted to see what others thought. I will post the info when the sword arrives....In the meantime, take a shot at it!

Chris san,

no wonder you haven't finished Bo-en-jo yet, you're on ebay all day :D

About the sword...

The hamon reminds me of 2 WWII Seki gendaito smiths' work:

Mori Kunitoshi and Nakata Kanehide.

Of the two, I would favour Kanehide as he seems to have favoured Bizen hamon over Mino hamon IMHO, (at least, I have seen more of them).

There is a third smith lurking in my memory banks too, if I can remember his name I will get back to you.

Regards,

Given the choji and the lacquered 44 pattern saya, my guess is Nagamitsu although the lobes look larger and less tight which I prefer. Nice pickup!

I was thinking about bidding too...

When I saw the hamon on this picture - together with the specific Type 3 gunto fittings... I immediately thought: Ichihara Nagamitsu

Chris, when you have the sword and remove the tsuka, please upload some pcis of the inscription(s). Would be great.

I hope it is not Nagamitsu! but I suppose that would mean I could at least get my money back... :D

I think the choji is different than his usual work too though we won't know for sure until it arrives.

I don't think it is a Seki smith either due to a difference in the choji.

I will certainly post the mei when it arrives.

That's a fair guess Bruno. The hamon is quite similar to several of his blades I have seen and also similar to other Kato family smiths. It is also similar to some of the Yoshihara blades that came out of the Zoheisho with Nobutake mei....

Of the Kato group, maybe Kanefusa or Sanehira, but I was also thinking Tsuguhira or Tadatsugu.

It took me close to three hours to get the tsuka off...wow, can't remember one ever taking so long!

Well, Doug gets the prize! Nagamitsu it is! I was quite surprised as the hamon is a bit different than his usual work.

This one is a catch and release. I will put it up in the for sale section in the next few days.

Thanks to all who played....

So that's the rest of the story. who were you thinking it was?

The hamon is quite similar to that of the smiths from the Kato group, which I collect.

It's probably the best Nagamitsu I have seen and I would be tempted to keep it but my focus is on Tokyo smiths so it won't be here long...

Sorry, not interested in any more Nagamitsus... :rotfl: :laughabove:
