lkgmadmax Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 I have a couple of pictures of a Japanese Sword that my brother owns from WWII. We have removed the grip and have photographed the symbols on the tang. Any help we can receive in better understanding what we have here would be greatly appreciated. https://picasaweb.google.com/110444077131266705198/JapaneseSword?authkey=Gv1sRgCPXSwKKysPioCA Quote
Jean Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 David, Smith seems to be Norimitsu (20th century smith) Quote
lkgmadmax Posted May 25, 2014 Author Report Posted May 25, 2014 Jean thank you very much, I will be sure to sign in the future. Since these swords are all new to us, can you tell me since this is a 20th century sword would this be considered to be a factory production or made by hand? Thank you very much for the fast response! David Quote
Jean Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 David, I don't see in your pictures any stamp on the nakago/tang (I let you check) so could be traditionally made, I let members specialists in this era bring other info. Quote
Shugyosha Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 Hi David, I was about to write what Jean said. For a definitive view, it would help if you could post some detailed photographs of the "naked" blade without the tsuba and habaki showing, in particular, any activity in the hamon (hardened area near the edge of the blade) and in the area just above it. There's a thread here about arsenal stamps: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=8010&start=0 Kind regards, Quote
cabowen Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 Actually, the smith is Masanori....and it looks like a typical mass produced WWII era gunto blade. Quote
Jean Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 Yes you are right Chris, I was thinking Masanori when I wrote Norimitsu, it is the kanji Nori which drew my hand on the keyboard to Bizen Koto Quote
Peter Bleed Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 The sword looks pretty hum-drum, but the pistol could be pretty collecible - with an early date. Peter Quote
Stephen Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 A really nice set, hard to find Navy mounts that clean. You should hold onto them IMHO Quote
george trotter Posted May 26, 2014 Report Posted May 26, 2014 Interesting militaria...would appeal to those collectors. Of interest to us all though is the length of the navy blade....am I imagining it or is it short? Maybe a wakizashi length gunto...if so, it is rare and doubly so if navy. How long is the blade (tip to notch)? Regards, Quote
Stephen Posted May 26, 2014 Report Posted May 26, 2014 Thank you George, i was wondering the same thing. Not sure if i was seeing things. Quote
lkgmadmax Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 The sword looks pretty hum-drum, but the pistol could be pretty collecible - with an early date.Peter Peter thanks, the pistol is 1929, I picked up 2 more this week another early type from 1937 and a late 2nd type from 1944. Also picked up a Nambu Type 26, breech type 9mm revolver and holster. The pistols are mine the sword belongs to my brother. Quote
Stephen Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 soooooo how long is the sword, tip to brass collar/ Quote
