hxv Posted May 21, 2014 Report Posted May 21, 2014 Greetings, I have a general question regarding mei removal and the subsequent nakago repatination. If, say, I have a short three-character mei, how long, on average, would it take to repatinate the nakago once the mei has been removed? Before anyone shoots me, I'm not even remotely thinking of "Do-It-Yourself." It's more a question of timeline. I know there are many different factors that determine the time required for repatination, but what would it be on average? Regards, Hoanh Quote
Jean Posted May 21, 2014 Report Posted May 21, 2014 Hoanh, Repatination being artificial/chemical, it would not take too long. Less than the waiting list for polishing. Quote
hxv Posted May 21, 2014 Author Report Posted May 21, 2014 Thank you Jean. So, would you say 2 months, or more? Regards, Hoanh Quote
cabowen Posted May 21, 2014 Report Posted May 21, 2014 It depends on how it is done. Some jobs are better than others and some take more time. Hard to say how much time-I would talk to a few different people that have the expertise. Quote
takakage Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 A nakago like this one http://www.nihontocraft.com/Shitahara_T ... Katana.htm Quote
Dr Fox Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Thanks for posting that Patrick, to me thats an amazing job, hard to see there was a mei there at all. Expertise at its best. Quote
nihonto1001 Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 One of the older collectors once told me, 'Shinsa 3X before removing a mei'. Some gimei are obvious, but I can't help thinking about the possibility of maybe, a student of the smith signing on his behalf, or a lesser known smith with the same name... We have all heard those stories of the same sword (mei removed) papering back to the original mei. Once the mei is removed, history is lost forever. For what, a slip of paper? Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted May 24, 2014 Report Posted May 24, 2014 About 450 years. Sorry, could not resist Hoahn Quote
