Stephen Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 Ill try some daytime shots, seems i cant photo anything anymore, heres a scan Quote
Stephen Posted May 2, 2014 Author Report Posted May 2, 2014 Ill try to get some more shots this weekend, too much to do with sunny day after what seemed a week of rain. Now id like some opinions on the current project, looks just ok? too hokie? forgetaboutit? budget did not allow for new habaki and seepa. The habaki was a found item from a gunto, sliver wash that was mostly gone, and a few old brass/copper seppa i had in the house. after a few trys i got the liver of Sulpher to patia them to where im ok with for now. Your take? Quote
Brian Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 Looks ok to me....lots going on in that hamon too. Habaki and seppa are fine...no need to upgrade unless something about them bugs you. Someone will come up with cheap and nice seppa. habaki is fine as is. Brian Quote
Stephen Posted May 3, 2014 Author Report Posted May 3, 2014 Wow, the response. Is this so non traditional that it doesn't warrant a opinion? Every one has one so i take it im being black balled...just say the word and im gone. Quote
Brian Posted May 3, 2014 Report Posted May 3, 2014 I prefer the seppa gold coloured/brass. Better contrast with the tsuba (which looks quite nice) Not bright polished brass...just slightly aged but still gold coloured brass. I'm guessing if it is using 4 seppa, then the spacing calls for 4 seppa. Might want to grab some thicker brass and make 2 of those thicker seppa with edge decoration. Here's a bulk deal for someone: http://www.ebay.com/itm/D3171-jaSw-Japa ... 1327939245 Red copper ones might be a little soft, but look quite nice: http://www.ebay.com/itm/superior-red-co ... 1096661902 Lots of seppa: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/seppa Brian Quote
Stephen Posted May 3, 2014 Author Report Posted May 3, 2014 I have two gold foil in mind but need the funds, maybe after i do some shipping. and right at moment i need four for a tight fit of the tsuka tsuba Quote
Brian Posted May 3, 2014 Report Posted May 3, 2014 What colour is the habaki under that patina? You say it was silver washed once...should be a piece of cake to get it silver washed again? Probably some online instructions on doing some home electroplating. Think silver or brass shows off darker tsuba more. On kinko tsuba....darker habaki/seppa. That's just my own opinion. Brian Quote
Jean Posted May 3, 2014 Report Posted May 3, 2014 Quite good Stephen and I have seen a lot worse done by Japanese dealers. Quote
Dr Fox Posted May 3, 2014 Report Posted May 3, 2014 Wow, the response. Is this so non traditional that it doesn't warrant a opinion? Every one has one so i take it im being black balled...just say the word and im gone. Stephen don't you go anywhere! I have been where you are now, and your good luck is getting an habaki, that not only fits but looks as if it belongs. So thats obviously a great start point, but for me a copper, gold or silver finish would be the look. The distance between the fuchi and habaki base is the only problem you have to solve. In your case again you are nearly there, I can only echo that two thicker seppa will serve, and made by yourself will be a delight to you. I have in the past been able to change the tsuba, from thin to thick, and vice versa, but on a wak it has to be in balance. Regards. Quote
Stephen Posted May 3, 2014 Author Report Posted May 3, 2014 Thanks guys, this is all temp, i will have a new habaki to fit, two piece with part shakudo and sliver, gold if it was koto. till then this will do. Quote
Brian Posted May 3, 2014 Report Posted May 3, 2014 Looking forward to more pics of the blade. You haven't said much about that? Brian Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted May 3, 2014 Report Posted May 3, 2014 What about the tsuka? I love makeing tsuka's. Quote

Baka Gaijin Posted May 4, 2014 Report Posted May 4, 2014 Good morning Stephen, Having an enterprising and somewhat nutty Chemistry Master who actually had a plate in his head from WW2. He regaled us with stories of base metal turned to Gold and proceeded to show us how in 15 minutes using a copper coin. This wonderful oddity, part Alchemist, part Shaman and lifelong supporter of John de Vere, 14th Earl of Oxford as the actual author of the Plays and Sonnets ascribed to Shakespeare, was in the first drop at Arnhem with General "Roy" Urquhart. Here's a safer method than he used, it's simple, fun and only mildly dangerous http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/pract ... r-and-gold Cheers Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted May 4, 2014 Report Posted May 4, 2014 Funny But true..... The Classics Master had a tandem cycle which he named "Priapus" Nice Sword BTW Quote
Stephen Posted May 4, 2014 Author Report Posted May 4, 2014 ok took some time out side, could not really see the view finder but gave it a go or two, hope you like them. saya was done by Bob as well, also is doing the daito insteed of me. Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 4, 2014 Report Posted May 4, 2014 The nie is sprinkled about like stars in the Milky Way. A good example of what is meant by the term. John Quote
Brian Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 Wow..far better than the scan. Yes, that is lovely. A very good polish, really showing off the nie. Couldn't be used as a textbook image. Looks like quite a tight hada? Very nice indeed! Brian Quote
Dr Fox Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 Yes Stephen 2 wows are in order. In hand that would be a stunner! Quote
loiner1965 Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 Very nice! Ditto mate........very lovely indeed Quote
cabowen Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Nice blade Stephen! I've been told that Bob is basically retired from the sword polishing end of things and that he has a student or students that do the work. I would assume that is the case here....How is the foundation polish? Quote
Stephen Posted May 6, 2014 Author Report Posted May 6, 2014 Thank you one and all Chris i have yet to talk to Bob, he took a trip after the show and is just getting settled back in at home. so i cant say for sure whom did it if not him. Im sure it was done under his eye. I did your bulb test and not a waver in the up and down the blade or the bulb. some shots every thing is in line not the best photos Quote
Brian Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I did your bulb test and not a waver in the up and down the blade or the bulb... And that is the test that people who use amateur polishers will be shocked at. It is scary when you think your lines and polish are well done, and then see how much that light can change as you go down the blade. People think home polishing is easy...this is one of the things that separates novices from professionals. Brian 1 Quote
