cabowen Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 Outside my comfort zone with these- any opinions? The fuchi/gashira and kojiri, made by the same artist (Toshimasa) look to be very late work...Anyone have any info on Toshimasa? Tsuba by Akasaka Tadanori. Opinions? Thanks.... Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 That is 山東子 Santoshi Toshimasa. Tokyo late 19th century. John Quote
cabowen Posted April 30, 2014 Author Report Posted April 30, 2014 Thanks John.....I can't find any info about him. Must not have been a kinko of note... Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 Not of note perhaps, but, competent enough. High relief inlay his style, it seems. I have noticed that during this late stage silver seemed to become more popular as the base metal. John Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Another example of his work http://art.thewalters.org/detail/32350/tsuba-with-crabs-and-lotus-plants/ Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 The problem is there were a few late period artists that signed Toshimasa. Which one is this? Isokichi, Goto, Kitamura, Santoshi? John Quote
cabowen Posted May 1, 2014 Author Report Posted May 1, 2014 The fuchi has the santoshi go.... thanks again.... Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Yes, I had seen that, as my first post indicated, it was the link Reinhard provided. It gives no indication of which Toshimasa. John Quote

John A Stuart Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Sorry, Franco. Why I thought Reinhard as I was writing? Search me, just one of those things I guess. Anyhow I am not convinced the tsuba Franco linked to is by the same Toshimasa. John Quote

John A Stuart Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 there are a few folk I wish would rejoin the dialog sometimes. John Quote
Geraint Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Any chance of some pictures of the whole koshirae, Chris? It looks rather gorgeous so far......... All the best. Quote

I was one of those who thought that maybe his return would be of benefit to the members...that is until I happened to re-read an old thread last night that he had got involved with....it reminded me of why we are better off without him. Sorry Lee, he was just plain nasty and destructive. Brian did the board a favour getting rid of him. With respect, Quote
Brian Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Guys, I do NOT want this discussed. And for the record, I did not get rid of him, he chose not to participate. He is welcome to post any time he is inclined. Brian Quote
Lee Bray Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Thank you, Brian, for stating that you did not ban him. No more said from me. Quote
cabowen Posted May 1, 2014 Author Report Posted May 1, 2014 geez, why do my threads seem to be hijacked more often than not??? No comments on the tsuba??? Quote
Lance Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Below's a link to another example with the same theme signed Tadanori Tetsugendo.com, I can't make out the kanji on the tsuba though, maybe you can contact Mike Yamasaki for a clearer image of the mei on his tsuba? It's listed as having Hozon papers so it could make for a good comparison. http://tetsugendo.com/kodogu/FT-179_Aka ... anori.html Your tsuba does look to be later, maybe late Edo, Hayne's index has 2 Akasaka Tadanori, maybe your's is the 2nd? (pics below) Hope this is of some use. Regards, Lance Quote
cabowen Posted May 1, 2014 Author Report Posted May 1, 2014 Thank you very much Lance, much appreciated. Quote
george trotter Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 Sorry Chris, sometimes it can't be helped, especially when unpleasant subjects intrude into decent discussion... Keep up the good work, Quote
