strange nakago on Tanto

Hello,

 

I saw this blade recently on eBay. The Nakago looks very strange --> the mekugi ana has been filled...?!

Any ideas why resp. how is the Tsuka fixed....

Hi Klaus.

 

The koshirae has been redone at some time. The tsuka is not part of the original, perhaps the mekugi ana was filled then because the person doing the work thought it unnecessary.

This is a destroyed tanto. I am not sure if it has a hamon at all. If yes, it is likely saiha.

I wonder what it is filled with, is it metal? or a residue of the type of resin that is used to fix Kogatana and Menuki.

 

My suggestion is that it was fixed in a tsuka with resin at some point.

 

just a thought.

I may be wrong but I believe that this lister is the same one who offers very badly deteriorated tsuba at very high prices on Ebay.
