How could we help without photos of the blade?

Todd,

You are more than safe. I would say the tsuba alone is already almost twice what you are paying for the entire package. Go for it...

Stephen,

The nakago does look ubu to me as well. The blade has what looks like a nasty lamination opening, so no love lost there. But, for that price, given the nice tsuba, I wouldn't think twice. Personally, what I would do is pawn off the blade on ebay and keep the tsuba. But, that's just me.

Yea Todd, i seen it its not death, like i said a good togi can work the steel. Turned and cropped mei, funny that the right stroke looks turned wrong??? Maybe a pro can fine tune this mei for us???

OK, one word - you are safe if you are positive that this sword has no hagire. Otherwise than that, I agree with the opinion that this is a steal.

Hoanh, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the tsuba. It is a pretty bland Edo "tosho" piece (look at its size and the number and placement of sukashi) and the rim is a later addition, perhaps a fix to a damaged tsuba. Very ordinary.

The sword is nice, the delamination is not a deal killer.

How long is the blade (cutting part and the whole)? I can't make ths ot in the pics, sorry.

Could the first kanji be "Tame"?

A good deal. But needs someone to spend some serious $$'s on it and have it properly restored. Don't just buy it as an item of militaria..it needs some work and research. Congrats :)

Interesting. So this is definitely a Muromachi blade?

Length of edge is about 69.5CM. Total length is 86CM.

No hagire that I can see.

I'm mostly into WW2 militaria but I ended up with an Emura for that.

Having a real deal older blade, even if it's a parts sword is kinda cool!

I really appreciate everyone's insight on this as it is well outside my realm of knowledge.

Todd, it is not a "parts" sword. It is a sword. Don't confuse the blade with the mountings, they are separate entities in the nihonto world. You have what seems a fine sword. If you have the funds, you should send it to Japan or to Bob Benson in Hawaii to have it polished.

Beware of amateur polishers with sites claimign god knows what... Don't try to save on polish, the result will be only a tremendous loss of value of your sword...
