Ed Hicks Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 This bronze is part of a group of Benito Mussolini's personal items removed from his desk in his office at Lake Garda as souvenirs by a 10th Mountain NCO in 1945...I assume it was a gift from someone, but I have no idea if it was presented by the Japanese Consulate or from some admirer...Either way it's quite a striking piece. Meiji Bronze Eagle Mei translation needed...I read it as Toshi Masa...If not would someone please correct the translation. Thanks. Ed Quote
leo Posted March 29, 2014 Report Posted March 29, 2014 Ed, it is a falcon, not an eagle. Cheers, Martin Quote
Ed Hicks Posted March 29, 2014 Author Report Posted March 29, 2014 Martin, what can I say? I am not a bird man. Thanks for the correction. Ed Quote
Brian Posted March 29, 2014 Report Posted March 29, 2014 It's a beauty! Can you imagine how lovely it would look mounted in a piece of old weather-worn wood? Is it yours Ed? Brian Quote
Ed Hicks Posted March 29, 2014 Author Report Posted March 29, 2014 http://www.warpathmilitaria.com/engine/inspect.asp?Item=232&Category=All&Filter=Gallery Thanks, Brian, it is mine...part of a very interesting grouping liberated from Mussolini's home (link above to more details)...No way now to know if it had been a gift from the Japanese government or just a nice piece obtained some other way...It had a marble base when picked up, but the soldier discarded that along with Mussolini's office desk phone since they proved too heavy to carry. Peter Bleed Posted March 29, 2014 Report Posted March 29, 2014 I note the anatomical location of the artist's signature. Might it reflect bad self image. Or maybe it is a subtle hint that the mei may be - ahhh - suspect. Peter PS I'm glad to find the Board up and running. Quote
