jezah81 Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Is it easy or possible to repair a habaki which has the soldering seam come apart just a fraction? Or is a whole new habaki in need? The habaki that im talking about is about 100 years old. Kind Regards, Jeremy Hagop Quote
mike yeon Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 A number of older habaki I own seem to have this issue. Some have slight hairline openings at the seam, others have come apart up to a 1/3rd of the way. I wouldn't worry so much about it unless it's completely open. The habaki is a very important part of the sword but if you're not using it for iaido, then I wouldn't worry. But, if it bothers you on an aesthetic level, you can look into getting it repaired. Brian Tschernaga (sp?) is a well reputed habaki maker that may help repair or make a new habaki for you. mike Quote
jezah81 Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 Hi Mike, Thanks for the response. It is only a hairline opening at the seam, but i do use this sword for iaido and tameshigiri. So, it probably worth getting fixed??? What ya think? Kind Regards, Jeremy Hagop Quote
Jon Fury Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Jeremy, As you are actually using the sword,Ted Tenold has answered your question on the 'Bugei' Forum. Quote
Darcy Posted July 21, 2007 Report Posted July 21, 2007 Speaking as a metalworker, with soft metal anything is possible. Ted probably has a better answer as mentioned above. If you want to save the habaki, you could probably send it to Brian Tschernaga who is skilled beyond belief. I just dabbled in soft metal work, when I see what he is able to make with his hands I am astounded. Quote
