iowa1111 Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 I recently attended an auction-I have been gone a while and do not run into much in my area. This kind of stuck out for me- so I purchased it. I am posting several pictures because I would like the forum to make judgments on it. So far- Mumei tang-wood saya wrapped in WWII Leather saya. tsuka is wrapped in WWII tradition, but non WWII fittings. I believe blade and fittings were reto- fitted for WWII gunto. Tsuba is very interesting and uncleaned, I can see faint inlay with the proper light, opinions? I have my own opinions on this, Early Edo? Heianjo? But implore the board for theirs. I will post further pictures if requested in second post. Thanks Joe Quote
iowa1111 Posted February 13, 2014 Author Report Posted February 13, 2014 Sorry got some more Thanks JH Quote
Peter Bleed Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 The blade cries for shinsa. And Tampa is coming up Peter Quote
Jamie Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Is the point against the floor in that picture? You might consider handling the blade with a microfiber cloth. Quote
Stephen Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 wow nice find, auction in DsMo?....missed that one. it may have a mei, ive see them covered with so much patina you can hardly see them. some close ups of the nagago as you did the tsuba would tell us more. Be glad to take a look at it if you want to come over. once more very nice find out of the woodwork. Quote
Marius Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Do I see ghosts or is the nakago burnt? Blue-grayish fire scale falling off in some places or is it some paint, or maybe it is the original patina with inserts of red rust? Hard to see in the pics... Quote
kunitaro Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Do I see ghosts or is the nakago burnt? Blue-grayish fire scale falling off in some places Good eye Quote
Stephen Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Id want better pix before id call fire scale, see the red rust areas, more pix please. Quote
iowa1111 Posted February 13, 2014 Author Report Posted February 13, 2014 Here are some more close ups. Thought I would see you there Stephen, maybe next week I can stop over. Thanks Joe Quote
Stephen Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 yea Joe i did not even see in the paper, who had it? ill save any more comment until i see it in hand, one of the nice things about touch screen laptops is i can expand the photo, i may be seeing things in the file marks but feel a mei is there, dont hold me to it might just be old flashbacks...lol. Any time is fine for me just PM me or call if you still have my number. Quote
cabowen Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Do I see ghosts or is the nakago burnt? Blue-grayish fire scale falling off in some places or is it some paint, or maybe it is the original patina with inserts of red rust? Hard to see in the pics... First thing I thought as well... Nice auction find if bought cheaply but I see nothing here of real quality. Quote
runagmc Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Should fire scale be filed off after yakinaoshi? Would it be removable by a brass wire brush or something? Seems weird someone would go to the trouble of rehardening a sword, and then leave fire scale on the nakago... It does look unusual though... Quote
cabowen Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 depends on who does it and what the intent is (if to simply make the blade serviceable it might not be completely cleaned off)....Not all blades, especially those that are yaki-naoshi, are thought to be collectible art swords, but rather "users"... Quote
runagmc Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 It looks like the habaki wasn't replaced after machi-okuri either... Also, does anyone have pictures of a nakago that they know for sure has fire scale? Just as reference... Quote
Stephen Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Joe dont let all the poo pooing get to ya, its a nice bit of history, alot of members have become jaded by holding masters works. Quote
iowa1111 Posted February 13, 2014 Author Report Posted February 13, 2014 No worries Stephen, you know as well as I any work to turn up in iowa in nice, master or not. There is definitely a residue at the end of tang, paint or other. I would be surprised if a signature is under it, I will need to inspect closer. Thanks Joe Quote
