Hello all,

I am totally out of luck with this kozuka.

The closest I can come is #,#,#, FU sane-zane, KO + Kao

FUKO?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would love to know the poem as well but any help would be great.

A few hairs closer to the inevitable

Cheers,

peter

Hi Peter,

The poem is a haiku from Matsuo Bashô and reads:

いざ行む雪見尓古ろぶ所まで

Iza yukan, yukmi ni korobu, tokoro made.

Well, let´s go snow-viewing till we slip and fall.

The mei gives me a litte headache. I think it reads "Kishôtei Iehiro + kaô" (其升亭家弘)

but "Kishôtei" was the gô of Ôtsuki Mitsuhiro (H 05188.0). So maybe I´m wrong with

my reading "Iehiro" or there is also the possibility that we have here an unrecorded early

name of Mitsuhiro...

mei: "Seiryûken Yoshinori + kaô"

Wow! A huge Thank you marcus and ludolf for your help!

I had some hope for the mei but not so much for the haiku.

Not sure I will ever get to the level to be able to read sosho

Marcus , can I ask you if the haiku has any relevance to the subject.

It was suggested that it had something to do with the ducks staying together for life?

I would love to hear any thoughts on the piece as a whole.

Thank you both again,

Sincerely,

Peter

Peter, you are absolutely right with the ducks and their symbolism but

the haiku is not connected to the motif. Bashô tried to encourage his

readers to go out and "feel" and "experience" the snow rather than

meeting for a stiff snow viewing gathering. Maybe it was the favourite

poem of the commissioner of the piece or had some other context.

Hello everyone,

I Thank you all for your input.

George, I purchased this recently at an antique show. The gentleman I got it from

stated that it was an ex-museum piece from Argentina as well as the comments on the ducks

staying together for life.

Cheers to All,

Pete
