pcfarrar Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 I just noticed Aoi are selling a machine made WW2 showato Surely this sort of sword is illegal in Japan?? https://www.aoi-art.com/auction/en/auct ... 1141534367 Quote
David Flynn Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 It problably got through because it dosen't have an exceptance stamp. David Quote
pcfarrar Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 I can't belive someone is bidding 200,000 yen for a gimei showato  I have noticed Aoi Auctions seems to be a dumping ground to offload all the "bad" stuff. Still at least they are truthful.... Quote
Rich T Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 I may be wrong, that showato can be sent out of the country as long as they dont come back. No one really cares about that. Rich Quote
Nobody Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 I do not think that the showato in question is illegal. At least formally, the nihonto was registered and also has Torokusho. I do not know the exact conditions for nihonto to be accepted by the authority. Is it acceptable using machine hammer in forging process? Quote
Mantis dude Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 In reading the interview book on modern swordsmiths (can't remember exact name of it) there were comments that many smiths today use the electric hammer. So that has no bearing. I believe it is mostly due to steel although even older swords used non-tamahagne steel, but those are traditionally made. What about oil tempered swords are they legal or not? Quote
Andrew Ickeringill Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Another reason for swordsmiths to use the power hammer in this day and age is the fact that the average swordsmith simply can't afford to have 2 or 3 deshi hammering away with him as is the traditional way, so a power hammer is necessary (or at least a huge help) to get the work done alone. Nobody Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Andrew I said: so a power hammer is necessary (or at least a huge help) to get the work done alone. Thanks Andrew, Yes, you are right. I also realized the same thing just after my previous post. Quote
