Our local Soldiers Memorial museum asked for a translation of this arm band. I see Showa, is that a form of 4...and I suspect the rest is a name. I'll pass on a correct reading of this for the museum, if available. Thanks. Ron STL

The writing on the armband reads:

Na, Shôwa-ku (名、昭和區) - Na(goya), Shôwa Ward

Shôei-bungô (松榮分會) - Shôei municipal mergers and dissolution

Seems that the man was an officer or staff responsible for one of the many

municipal mergers and dissolutions carried out during the former half of the Shôwa

era. Shôei was once a district of the Shôwa Ward.

Thanks Marcus, I'll pass this along. It turns out this did not come from our local museum, but posted on Bowen's Token list. Poster's email is Soldiers Memorial...should have remembered that from earlier posting. Still, an interesting arm band/historical note.

Hi Markus, have you ever written at all about your background and how you came to be so knowledgeable about the language, and other aspects, of Japan. If yes, where? If no, please do, if you care to. If you don't care to, that's OK too... I still thank you for sharing your knowledge here. :D

..........

Na, Shôwa-ku (名、昭和區) - Na(goya), Shôwa Ward

Shôei-bungô (松榮分會) - Shôei municipal mergers and dissolution

........................

The second line reads

Shôei-bunkai (松榮分會) - Shôei branch.

I guess that the description means a branch name of a local unit such as Tonarigumi.

Thank you Koichi san for your correction! I was wrongly looking for the characters (分合) whilst (會) is the old one for (会) of course. Problem was that what I found made a bit sense too, otherwise I might had been able to spot my mistake soon. Sorry for the confusion.

@Adam: You can find a little info about me on my blog ;) Unfortunately I don´t have the time at the moment as I am leaving in a couple of hours to our NBTHK-EB meeting.
