raven2 Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 OK, here is an interesting one. A modern day tsuba carved from a slice of a meteorite. Has anybody ever heard of something like this? It is definitely modern work but weird. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Meteorite-Tsuba ... 4d17361723 Quote
b.hennick Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Real meteorite but ugly tsuba and very ugly seppa. I have never seen one like it before. Quote
Alex A Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 This is a new one, the last one I seen was a bottle opener made from a slice of Brenham Pallasite (stony iron meteorite). If I remember correctly, that one was priced at $16000. Folk make all sorts from meteorites. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Fred, it is perhaps rare but I don't think it is interesting from the view of NIHONTO. It seems to have been Laser-cut, it is not well made and the maker does not seem to have seen a real TSUBA from close. I don't think that 'this is really beautiful', and I never heard about any 'test of time' in relation to TSUBA. Any iron having been used in a TSUBA is about 4,5 billion years old, and that is sufficient as far as I am concerned. I'm not impressed. Quote
Alex A Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 My sentiments exactly Mariusz. For anyone who may be interested, be aware that meteorites need special attention, they can oxidize rapidly. I find the notion of mounting this tsuba ridiculous. Quote

Hi Jean, I didn't say I was impressed, just that it was weird and since this is the ebay forum and we put lots of fakes up on it and discuss them, I was adding to it. I happen to agree with Mariusz, that it is a waste of a good meteorite. Quote
drbvac Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 It actually is a waste of a lot of things in addition to a meteorite, like time, effort, thought, listing, describing, etc etc Quote
Alex A Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Its surprising at times what folk will buy. Theres probably a wife or girlfriend looking at this tsuba now thinking "my boyfriend will love that, he likes nihonto and rocks from space, perfect," I best warn her, il will tell her the usual slippers will suffice :D Quote
