Grey Doffin Posted January 2, 2014 Report Posted January 2, 2014 2.7 cm long. It has 2 pins on the back so I suppose it could be a kiseru ornament but seems too nice for that. Grey Quote
Ron STL Posted January 2, 2014 Report Posted January 2, 2014 My post of 12/21 of seven orphans...if anyone wants the lot for what?...$300?...you can have them, post paid. Ron STL Quote
bluboxer Posted January 3, 2014 Report Posted January 3, 2014 Thanks Brian! What a great sticky. I have a sleeping swordsman(?) on a tanto that needs a mate. 22mm x 18mm. Quote
Brian Posted January 3, 2014 Author Report Posted January 3, 2014 Nice one Alan. He may be playing a flute? Brian Quote
bluboxer Posted January 3, 2014 Report Posted January 3, 2014 Okay, I can see that. I will have to contemplate why that did not occur to me. 1 Quote
tony edmunds Posted January 3, 2014 Report Posted January 3, 2014 Hi Guys Here are three more orphaned menuki. I'd be happy to sell any/ all or buy matching examples. All three are shakudo. All the best Tony Quote
Guido Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 He may be playing a flute? That's what I see, too. The obvious match would be an oxen, then; should not be too difficult to find. Quote
Brian Posted January 5, 2014 Author Report Posted January 5, 2014 Guido Could you expand on the link please? I know I could hit the books or Google, and find it myself. But it's a Sunday, and I am going back to work tomorrow after a nice vacation that was too short, and am feeling miserable...so can I be lazy and ask you to do the work for me? Brian Quote
Guido Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 I'll give you a hint: http://books.google.co.id/books/about/T ... edir_esc=y Quote
Henry Wilson Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Something to do with this? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Bulls Quote
Guido Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Indeed. It's not that common a Kodôgu theme, but often found in paintings and especially Netsuke, like this one from the Met: 1 Quote
Stephen Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Ah yes from my Zen readings...Catch Bull at Four....transcended to the Range as after the third shot and adjusting for windage elevation the forth was in the X ring or catching the bull at four. 1 Quote
bluboxer Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Thank you kind gentlemen for the insights and links. I have added an image of the other side and from the old shadow left from the missing menuki it appears to have been as all have suggested. ("enlightened" smiley here) Now I am searching for my missing ox. Very Zen like Stephen. Are we reminiscing of warmer days in the field? Cheers! 1 Quote
Kurikata Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Hello, on my side if somone one has a similar round (1 cm) menuki, fell free to PM me..... Thank you Quote

Ron STL Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 Lousy photography, but a nice example of the oxen and the flute playing owner. Ron STL Quote
dirk marshall Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 I just wish to say how pleased I am for the menuki I received from Ian C. Thanks! 1 Quote
Nihonto Chicken Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 David.N Almost a match, mine has an added flower motif, but at least it's facing the opposite direction: Measures 4.0 cm by 1.7 cm. Unusual construction, very thin, I'm thinking perhaps a very low gold alloy, like 9 kt, or perhaps shakudo? What do you all think? Quote
Geraint Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Hi Rick. As no one else has stepped in, the lower image is of a late pressing, hence the thin and uniform edge. These were manufactured in some quantity and you find them on swords but also applied to a variety of decorative objects made for the Western market around the turn of the century, sorry that's 19th/20th century. I found a cigarette box once with about twenty of them fastened by thin pins soldered to the back . You also more rarely find genuine menuki, sometimes by master craftsmen, applied to higher status objects. Probably made of brass which is blackened on the face to resemble shakudo. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. All the best. Quote
Brian Posted February 2, 2014 Author Report Posted February 2, 2014 Thought someone had addressed these by now. Thanks Geraint. Yes, they aren't menuki. Sometimes with 2 pins they are used as tobacco pouch ornaments. Or as decoration on furniture. They aren't junk...just not menuki Brian Quote
Nihonto Chicken Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Okay, not menuki per se, I had concerns re the back side construction. Still, the workmanship doesn't appear to be all that bad on the front side, rather passable to my eye at least. Thanks for the info as to the origin and use. Quote
DGARBUTT Posted February 14, 2014 Report Posted February 14, 2014 Here are some single menuki. 1 Quote
