Martin Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 Hi all, I was wondering why the Hada of this blade is that conspicuous. http://cgi.ebay.com/Japanese-sword-Masa ... dZViewItem Was the sword maybe treated with some etching fluid to better bring out the Hada :? Sorry for this maybe rather silly question :D cheers, Quote
USMC-LCPL Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 ... Or maybe it's fake? Looks alot like acid etching... And the guy didn't sound 100% legit... "Cutting blade is still very sharp!" How would he know? I thought Nohonto collectors never touched the edges of their blades... Quote
Stephen Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 it may have had the lemon aid wash? its not a fake...soshu full temper or hitatsua ....time to read the books. Quote
Brian Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 The blade is not a fake, and the seller is 100% legit. Let's be careful before we make assumptions, as the NMB has to stand behind much of what is said here. As for the hada, doesn't appeal to me either. I doubt this is hitatsura. Could this blade be very tired, with lots of shingane showing through? Brian Quote
USMC-LCPL Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 Just guesses, (obviously not very educated ones) no accusation was meant. Quote
Pete Klein Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 I have a feeling it is shingane as if you look at the so-hi it fades in and out, most likely polished away along with the skin steel. Quote
Curran Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 I'd rather someone ask Ted Tenold in on this one. I don't want to anger Brian by talking about an ongoing auction- but my initial reaction at seeing this was, "D*m*, I hope someone takes a ballpeen hammer to the hand of the guy who did this." To me it looks that some of the other blades have had mild acid used in their polish. Perhaps this poor child was forgotten overnight... Others look relatively okay. The damage runs north of the horimono and pools all the way through the horimono. Just not cool... Maybe if I had a few drinks I could find it groovey! But it currently looks like chemical landfill erosion to me. Quote
Pete Klein Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 While you're at it you can ask Ted about 'Ballpinechime'. Quote
Guest Simon Rowson Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 I'm going with the "core-steel showing through" argument. The hagane (outer steel) appears to have more holes in it than my socks! Simon Quote
