I have read elsewhere that swords of this early period had been imported from mainland China. Sword making in Japan seems to have started earlier indeed. Great information!

Interesting Chris. I look forward to seeing a pic or two of the sword.

My daughter and I often walked around the Princess Ne-hime key-hole tomb and mounds at Kasai (20 minutes up behind Himeji) where she taught English. I always liked the haniwa that were unearthed. I never saw a sword though.

Very interesting that Morihiro Ogawa is thought of highly enough to be brought in on the project - long way from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. I would think he may feel that quite an honour indeed.
