Nihonto Nodachi

I see a lot of Katana and smaller blades. Are there traditionally made nodachi on the market too? Also any books out there on the nodachi that you guys have enjoyed?

Oh... I just saw there's another nodachi for sale on that same site. By Hizen no Kuni Mitsuhiro made in 1952. This one is 99cm. The first one I mentioned is 90cm.

Price for the second one is € 14.900,-

Yes, I like that one as well. I actually saw it in real life when the Dutch Token society had an exhibit at an antique gun show in Holland several years ago.

It was the first nodachi I ever saw... I was in awe.

There was Kanefusa Odachi sold by Aoi-Art recently, unfortunately it's not on their site anymore but you can PM me if you'd like more info on it. Late Muromachi sword, 110,5 cm nagasa, ubu nakago. Spectacular sword, as I'm a fan of big swords it instantly won me over. If I remember correctly it sold for c. 1,7M Yen.

 

Aoi-Art sold last year Odachi that was made 2009 by Akamatsu Taro Kanetsugu (Kanesada Kimura). 102,7 cm nagasa, in koshirae, had very intresting koshirae with kurikata and sayamaki. Price was 800K Yen.

 

If someone has information about a book specifically focused on Odachi/nodachi, I'd love to know too. There are good bits of information scattered throughout many books.

Im in the middle of reading a good little book by Stephen Turnbull, ironically, theres a few snippets of information on the odachi/nodachi/seodachi (back carried tachi). He states that many of the surviving examples where made for presentation, rather than for battle. Apparently they where a great threat to a man on horseback on the Sengoku battlefield, with the horses legs being top of the agenda. Some where not sharpened all the way down the blade, hence they make good clubs too.

 

Id be interested if there was such a book, if anyone knows?
