Tom -- why not start by going to the links tab top page and look through all of the dealer sites merchandise to give you a basic/beginner's skill set. You should then purchase some books on the areas you find most interesting. Then and only then start purchasing, and only from a dealer. Attend some shows and join a club if available. After a few years you'll hopefully have the experience to buy on line auction style. Just my two cents, but they are rare coins.

I am on the right track then as I can check all of the above

Except time and a club!!!

Only problem with dealers is that I want to get my stuff from where they get there stuff.

Been to a couple of arms fairs (birmingham)and the dealers there....

No way!!!!!Over priced some looked like the yokote was sanded on the night before!

(not proper sword fairs do they even have them in the uk???)

Hi Tom.

Not sure where in the UK you are but you made it to Birmingham so hopefully you are within reach of the Northern Token Society, if much to the South then the Token Society of Great Britain meets in London. Chances for you to meet others and see some good stuff plus expose yourself, (perhaps I should reword that?) to some really knowledgable opinions and maybe even some stuff for your collection.

If you are in the South West give me a PM.

Hi Tom,

at first glance these Tsuba look painted and a bit dull/blunt. Not "crisp" enough.

...difficult for me to find the correct English words (im Deutschen würde ich sie "batzig" nennen ;-))

For this you don't need deep knowledge about Tsuba - simply try to see as much real good Tsuba and soon you will be able to identify these above examples as fakes (painted, cast, shabby,...)

this is the kind of stuff ben offered at ebay...

this, certainly is not the stuff you will see in any private collection-as far the collector does have any "slightest" knowledge...

There are(sorry to say this here)newbees still naive enough so to think they could make an deal by buying such/reason that kind of China garbage still and obviously does get however sold at ebay...?(Well)...conclusion as like always:

I.You do have knowledge=You do know what to buy=You do earn money(if that´s an intention)

II. You don´t have knowledge=You do buy medicore or even low(some even jump on junk like this)=You loose money!

Coming back to one sentence mentioned in an above answer to this threat:

You even are not beware about how many junk and fakes are spreading around!

Even auction houses are not longer secure....

BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS! Buy BOOKS!

Learn to see with your´s eyes!

(and equally please don´t forget also reading what is written inside,it seems many do forget about equally...)

Edit:

and now as we do speak about books:

Do buy the good books!(Good book=Knowledge written inside/Low price books=Massproduced, medicore works with no or only very moderate knowledge by the author)

You do find plenty of good books offered by Grey,Alan,(private sales section here on NMB) jbw.

Prices are collectors prices, not publishers prices-if still puzzeled-ask him(or seller) about what he would recomment you so to start with/tell your´s inquiery, tell your´s "level"- it´s his job and equally interest so to guide you correctly in finding you out the "in time appr."book for you..)

(doesn´t make sense to offer you an Taikan if you just start-as you don´t see or know how to work with it)

Most dealers get their stuff by spending alot of time traveling to sword/arms fairs militaria shows, auctions, maybe a web site, with potential sellers or buyers being directed to them based on their knowledge and reputation. Most of those things, especially knowledge take years.

As long as you find an honest and reliable dealer, wether locally or online it's probably worth the higher price, especially whens tarting out. Plus after developing a friendly relationship with a dealer, many will usually give you a better price, hold onto something they think you have an interest in, or a fair deal in selling or trading something you have when it comes time to move it on for something else.

The other option is to become a dealer yourself, and do all of the above till people start to bring you their items, but that's not always the greatest: I used to help my father at local antique and gun/military shows, and while it can be enjoyable, on slow days it could be like watching paint dry. :phew: (I wish there was a smilie for falling asleep)

Lance
