I may not be persistent enough to look through all the board discussions, but do we have a list of respectful e-bay dealers and other online auctions?

It's hard to believe that no serious collector ever buys fittings on-line.

That's what I am saying. Like when you want to find a good restaurant, you go to yelp, and when you want a good hotel, you go to tripadvisor. Don't we need the same for the dealers?

The problem is one person can have a good experience, the next, a bad. You need a large sample size in some cases to really sort out the situation and cut through the noise. That can be difficult. Also, it is easier to say one had a bad meal at Chez Paul as it isn't personal like it is if you say you got ripped off by Joe the sword dealer. The best thing to do is to ask around privately. If you look around this site you should have no trouble identifying the regular contributors and those with experience. BEFORE you buy, ask them privately what they think about the dealer/deal. Sometimes there will be conflicting opinions so you may need to get a reasonable sample size and make your own decision. Other times there may be agreement and while that is no guarantee on what you may experience, at least it seems less risky.

Providing a list of anything in today’s world, especially indicating respectability and integrity, is that the publishers of any such list, would have to accept responsibility for its content.

Who on this board, or any other member’s organisation, would regard that as a safe undertaking? This is not at all the same as lists of say ‘suppliers’, where availability is indicated without guarantees of satisfaction being given.

I can state as a fact that the JSSUS (Japanese Sword Society of the United States) does not recommend dealers, artisans, appraisers etc. to people. We discussed this and determined that legal liability follows recommendations. So when someone writes to the JSSUS I will not make such a recommendation on behalf of the JSSUS. That does not stop me in personal communication making recommendations. I am writing this post in my dual capacity of Director and Ombudsman JSSUS.
