Marius Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 It is funny how statements as to age made by dealers impact the bidding. I will refrain from comments on a live auction, this is just for your enjoyment and a cautionary tale for newbies: http://www.ebay.com/itm/121190933497?ss ... 1423.l2649 Quote

After a quick check, I did not find a smith "Mitsuyo" from this older era, but several from various periods up to Shinshinto. Is that your message or is it the quality of blade, lack of papers, Koshirae, or all of the above? Ben M. Quote
hxv Posted October 16, 2013 Report Posted October 16, 2013 Ben, When the seller mentions Mitsuyo of Heian period, only one smith comes to mind, http://www.touken.or.jp/english/nihon_koto_shi/(7)%20No.553.htm It's obviously gimei, and the seller knows it. Hoanh Quote

Hoanh Oh...that Misuyo....last entry on the Nihonto Club page. Of course not, and I can't believe those bidders were thinking that is THE Mitsuyo blade. Really? Lots of bids...do people think a gimei mei but decent blade in Koshirae is still worth $4,000? I guess so. To me...one omission may lead to another. Ben M. Quote
hxv Posted October 16, 2013 Report Posted October 16, 2013 Ben, Some gimei blades can be nice and worth $4k, just not the one for which Mariusz provided the link. It looks very tired with lots of forging flaws. Some segment of the economy must still be doing well...for that kind of money to be thrown away. Hoanh Quote
