Ray Singer Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 Hi all, would someone be able to assist with the mei on the attached tsuba? Many thanks, Ray Quote
george trotter Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 This name (lhs with kao) is Noriyuki (also read Kuzui)...his art name (rhs) is Bosoken. Hamano School. Noriyuki I, born Temmei 7 = 1787. Edo, Art names Chugoro, Gaiundai, Bosoken. Student of Hamano Masayuki Noriyuki II, Edo. names Matsujiro, Masakata, Norinobu, Shojuken. School of Noriyuki and Nagayuki. Born Kaei 5 = 1852...reached? 82 years. It looks like yours is Noriyuki I unless a gimei or daisakumei or...? I am not a fittings man, I am just quoting Hara 1905 p.135-6. Must be more up to date info available. Hope this helps, Quote
docliss Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Ray Both Hamano Noriyuki I (H 07454.0) and II (H 07455.0) used the gō of Bōsōken. There is one illustration of a kao quite like that on your tsuba on p.90, N 311 of Joly’s Shōsankenshu that is attributed to Noriyuki II. But the middle kanji of this gō of both of those artists differs from that of your’s, and I fear that the quality of this work is not of the standard of these two, much copied Hamano masters. Your tsuba is, I think, a gimei copy of the work of H. Noriyuki II. John L. Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 Thank you both, greatly appreciate the feedback on this piece. Best regards, Ray Quote

Kurikata Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 Hi , Can someone one give me clues on the fact that this signature might not be Gimei? If the signature is genuine can it be Hamano Noriyuki I or Noriyuki II? Thank you for your advise and expertise Quote
Akitombo Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 Hi If it is any help, this is a Noriyuki II in my collection which is real. You can compare the signature. David.N Quote
Kurikata Posted April 6, 2014 Report Posted April 6, 2014 David, based on your Tsuba, my signature seems quite different and confirming the "gimei" trend. Mariusz, you are right but i am not that proud of the pictures I have (I post them any way). These pictures are those of the auction house where I purchased the tsuba and as soon as I receive it , I'll provide better ones (ones the Tsuba will be cleaned gently). Thank you for your feed-backs Quote
