John A Stuart Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 You'll have to clue me in. These ko-Mino menuki look OK don't they? 550$ is cheap so far if they are. John Quote
Brian Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 Well..they are not the ones in the book/catalog if that is what he is insinuating.. Brian Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 21, 2013 Author Report Posted September 21, 2013 There's something wrong with one of the menuki. Look closely. Quote
Brian Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 All I can see is that they don't match the pics..one of them is a different menuki. But since I cannot read the Japanese, not sure if he is claiming they are the ones...or just similar. Brian Quote
Henry Wilson Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 They could be mushroom tempura. Go on Pete, put us out of our misery. Quote
Henry Wilson Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 They are deep fried though? Quote
BMarkhasin Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 Hard to say without having them in hand but the backs dont look right to me. Could the dogs have been spliced-in to the peonies? Boris Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 21, 2013 Author Report Posted September 21, 2013 Nope, and -- wait for it -- nope! Keep trying. Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 One of them is original, the other is a replica. . Quote

Pete Klein Posted September 21, 2013 Author Report Posted September 21, 2013 Sorry but -- Nope! PS: Waiting on Roman to give us his answer... Quote
Brian Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 Can't be the loss of the one post...saw that originally...but it is not uncommon, and not sure how much of a deal that is considered. Brian Quote
Peter Bleed Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 This is a great exercise, but I remain unconvinced - and awaiting an answer. Peter Quote
Stephen Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 got me going now, ones gold the others not? Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 21, 2013 Author Report Posted September 21, 2013 Brian - posts are both there. Veli - winner! I was primarily referring to the center where the stem has been detached at it's base. Bonus Point: How did this most likely happen??? Quote
Veli Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 Pete Klein said: How did this most likely happen??? Hmm... the menuki was fastened with resin and/or thread around the narrow flower stem and was damaged during the removal? Veli Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 21, 2013 Author Report Posted September 21, 2013 Bonus Point! Of course we cannot be certain but this type of damage often happens when the menuki are removed and the resin pulls on the metal or in the removal of the resin from the ura of the menuki. The stem is still there but it is moved to the side. The color difference around the posts is from the resinous 'glue'. Most likely genuine Ko Mino as the gauge of the metal is too fine for Goto and the piercings are typical for Ko Mino and Ezo fittings. Now then, see how easy it is to buy damaged goods on auction sites like Ebay and Yahoo!? Quote
TosoguCz Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 Yes I meant the middle part. It looks that is it even cracked/broken between shishi's head and a flower. This could happen very easily because gold sheet could be about 0,2mm thick. That's true about risk of buying such things only through pictures. Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 21, 2013 Author Report Posted September 21, 2013 Agreed. I was wondering if there has been an attempt to repair that as it looks like it might have been soldered. Not sure on that. Interesting example. Quote
John A Stuart Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 I have a set of dragon menuki that are resin filled and I definitely can see how it would be easy to damage them if the resin was to be removed. Very thin and fragile gold. I think these with so minimal damage are worth saving. Ko-Mino at such a low cost, hmmmm. Hard to spot, I didn't until it was pointed out and maybe they could be repaired.
