I am quite sure it's Japanese calligraphy by the way it is mounted.

Don't forget most Japanese literati are well verse in Chinese classics and kanji literally means " words of Han " .....I could be wrong, of course.

Yes, that may be something about H2O. :)

I think I idenfity at least 水 (water), 川 (river), and 船 (ship or boat).

Did artists usually sign and date their work? It is such a beautiful piece I am hoping you gurus putting fot knowledge together will uncover what I have been wondering for years:)

the left column ( smaller kanji ) are the artist's name, seals.........

going tru Darcys and Bob Bensons book there was a web site in the back that should help you, i dont have the books any more they sold in the first five min....i could of sold a doz....a young lady named Sakamoto? i think....someone help meout here and post it please...she will be able to help Tiffany.

It is Sanae Sakamoto..According to the book, she is a calligraphy expert , and can be found at http://sanae-sakamoto.ch

She is a calligraphy artist, and might be able to help if she does private translations. Getting a date will be very difficult unless the author once identified is known.
