Hi all,

Had a great Perth Militaria Fair. I was there both days (slave labour for my militaria dealer mate)...any way, saw a few swords...great selection at John and Cristy Grasso's table...including koto. A couple of young guys came in looking to sell a naked blade (out of polish)...looked shinshinto, very thick kasane and signed "Heianjo Horii Minamoto Sadamitsu" with a very long and detailed inscription on the ura...I sent him to John Grasso and he got it...(hope to hear some details about it later John).

All the local nihonto collectors popped in and it was nice to catch up. My "boss" got a guy bring in 7 tantos to sell and he had them sold again straight away...3 mounted as kaiken (2 quite good IMO) and 4 in shirasaya (more modern souvenir types IMO) . I think 3 were unsigned (never thought to take my camera with me dang!)...anyway, none were "up my alley" so passed on them, although one was gendai by "Munechiks" made as congratulations to Yamada san...I did not think the quality was there IMO.

However, late in the last day a dealer came over to me with a tanto (kaiken) and said he had it traded in on a sabre and wanted to make his money up and as it had a decent looking blade (out of polish and a couple of chips unfortunately), but it had a good shape and was restorable...hamon appears chu-midare with short kaeri, and is a nice thick hirazukuri blade of 16 cm (6.5 in) with 8 mm kasane (5/16 in) and uchizori, with good quality fittings (I'll post pics in a few days if anyone is interested?). It has a good habaki and nicely finished and signed nakago that was obviously gendai (sujikai with kessho and iriyamagata jiri...the mune is also kessho with an inscription (maybe date?...can't read-rust)...so, being gendaito I took a chance (real cheap price too heh heh).

If Chris is reading this it is signed Masayuki and by research of gendai Masayuki in Japanese sources and eliminating the only other gendai Masayuki smiths through comparing their oshigata in F & G and Fred Fimio etc...I have concluded that, although I did not find an oshigata of "my guy", by him not matching the others gendai Masyuki meis shown, he is most likely to be the only guy left, the un-illustrated Sunaga Wajuro (Meikan p. 898 also Hawley 1981 MAS1465) of Tochigi. He was born about 1883 and was RJT during WWII...so if correct, it will be a nice private order of his....must be rare to have a gendai RJT smith tanto?

Great to see the local gang and interstate guys...also had a well-known Japanese dealer here (as a visitor) and he was "happy as Larry" looking at all the militaria he can't own in Japan.

So, a great weekend...sorry to miss our local members who could not attend.

Sounds like a good time George, thanks for the info...

Offhand, not familiar with a gendai tosho named Masayuki....Please post some photos when you have a chance.

Yes, WWII era tanto are pretty rare, but not impossible to find as I have picked up quite a few over the years. Then again, I have been looking for them.

Thanks again...
