peterd Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Hello everybody, I was just wondering if anybody had any ideas regarding the theme of this Tsuba as I just cannot figure it out. All comments are welcome. Many thanks, Pete Quote
Thierry BERNARD Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 look like armor ( kabuto, dou, and horse armor)! Quote
Higo-san Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 Hi Pete, I believe that there are also some roof tiles shown on your tsuba. A very beautiful Sunagawa Tsuba by the way! Best, Chris 1 Quote
docliss Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 Yes, SHOHAKUDO SUNAGAWA MASAYOSHI with kao, and with the alternative kanji for 'sho' (H 04798.0). The third master of the Sunagawa family school, working in Bushu in the early C19. A nice tsuba indeed. John L. Quote
Soshin Posted August 21, 2013 Report Posted August 21, 2013 Hi Pete, What is happening to the patina on the seppa-dai on the ura side? I can't see from your photo if there is something wrong with the tsuba or it is some type of artifact of the photography. Quote
peterd Posted August 21, 2013 Author Report Posted August 21, 2013 in London working away at the moment. Home tomorrow, will give a better opinion then, but i think it is nothing more than the picture/lighting. Regards. Pete Quote
terminus Posted May 18, 2019 Report Posted May 18, 2019 Sorry to re raise this thread, but I found an almost exact same tsuba in really good condition with Tokubetsu Hozon Tousougu: http://world.seiyudo.com/product/tu-040519/Very interesting motif, almost aztec like in design. Quote
Shugyosha Posted May 18, 2019 Report Posted May 18, 2019 There was contact between Japan and Mexico (IIRC) in the early Edo period, so that might not be so improbable. Quote

BTW, no roof tiles and definitely no Aztec influence...design is Japanese. And yes, both tsuba are very similar, both very fine. -S- Quote
Brian Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 This is the problem with digging up old threads. There is nothing much new to add, and Thierry passed away sadly. This just opens old wounds. No-one's fault..but just a reminder. Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 Agreed, I'm sure the person who opened this thread had no idea. To prevent this sort of thing from recurring some old threads should, perhaps, be locked....someone could always reintroduce the matter if they felt it warranted. Surely anyone who had the pleasure of reading a post by Thierry remembers him fondly, his absence here is notable. Out of respect I felt compelled to leave this thread in the good order he had left it in. -S- 1 Quote
SteveM Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 The NHK paper on Tony's post calls the design 唐武具 (Tō bugu) or armor from the Tang Dynasty (China). 1 Quote

Shugyosha Posted May 20, 2019 Report Posted May 20, 2019 Sorry guys, I wasn't thinking when I replied to the thread. Quote
