This style of horimono is not very unusual. It's a gomabashi on one side and either a bohi or koshibi on the other side. Rather a common method of decoration by the Echizen Seki smiths as well as some other schools.

That is Mike Yamaguchi's auction and he is a good guy.... he sometimes sells some "project blades" but he makes no bones about them being nothing but a rusty peice of metal!!!

 

I have bought swords from him before and would trust him totally. As you see he offers a full refund if the blade does not pass shinsa and he gives you a 10 day inspection period (from the day YOU recive the blade) That is a pretty fair trading practice...

 

By the way it is not an embarrassing question at all... it is a very good question!! I learned something new...:D !!
