Kurikata Posted July 6, 2013 Report Posted July 6, 2013 Hello, I would like some one to helping translating this siganture. I have the first easy Kanji for sure (Masa) but what about the second one ? Is it taka ? Is this Tsuba Somin school? Thank you for your help Bruno P. Quote
NihontoEurope Posted July 6, 2013 Report Posted July 6, 2013 It is correct (as on the note attached to the Tsuba). /Martin Quote
Pete Klein Posted July 6, 2013 Report Posted July 6, 2013 It was most likely from this sale: Collection de M. Le Marquis De Tressan Gardes De Sabres Japonaises (Tsuba) du xiv au xix Siecle Kozuka - Fuchi-Kashira Ceramique De La Chine et Du Japon Masques De No Ouvrages d'art sur l'extreme-Orient Dont La Vente Aux Encheres Publiques ... 1933 I cannot find any information on this maker in Haynes or elsewhere by these kanji. Kurikata Posted July 6, 2013 Author Report Posted July 6, 2013 Thank you for your help . And what about the school? Sorry to insist.... Bruno P. Quote
docliss Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Dear Bruno Since your tsuba was listed in the Marquis de Tressan’s catalogue of 1933. it is surprising that this artist is omitted both from Haynes’, Index ... and his Addendum .... Thus, in the absence of any further information, it is impossible to associate Masataka with any school or master. Neither does the nine-stroke kanji for ‘Masa’ give any indication as to his lineage. It is quite good katakiri-bori work, but not necessarily of Yokoya origin. Yours, John L. Quote
Gunome Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Hello After looking in the Marquis de tressan's auction catalogue of 1933, the description of the tsuba n°403 said it is signed Masataka. This tsuba is listed in the section "Yokoya & Yanagawa families". May it can help ? Quote
docliss Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 This tsuba is listed in the ‘Yokoya & Yanagawa families’. I suspect that this listing is based solely on the cataloguer’s opinion of the work style, and has no basis on informed fact. John L. Quote
Kurikata Posted July 8, 2013 Author Report Posted July 8, 2013 Thank You Sebastien. I do not have this catalog and it is documentation to bring "History" to this Tsuba. Thank you again Bruno Quote
