Alex A Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Ive yet to come across a decent large fuchi, ive been looking for a while. Most are edo and seem to be around 37mm in length. Would anyone be able to tell me roughly what size a large fuchi would be for a stocky blade?. I know they made stocky blades in the late edo period too, where as all the large fuchi gone? Alex Quote
cabowen Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 This is an oft heard complaint by those looking to make a koshirae for their shinsakuto. It is VERY difficult to find an older fuchi in the 38mm-40mm range....in Japan, people are always looking for them. You will have better luck having one made or use a modern repro. Quote
Alex A Posted June 30, 2013 Author Report Posted June 30, 2013 Cheers Chris, another good reason to leave a blade in shirasaya. As you know, traditionally made new ones are expensive, thats the only way i would consider going, if i couldnt find an old one. Alex. Quote
cabowen Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 You might get lucky and find and old one, you never know. I know many people who are always combing the bins for these, so if you do find one, consider yourself lucky! Quote

Bazza Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 Alex, See viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16229 38.2mm length. Regards, Barry Thomas aka BaZZa. Quote
Alex A Posted July 1, 2013 Author Report Posted July 1, 2013 Cheers Baz, but I think it needs to be more near 42mm, short in height, around 6mm, plain type, in shakudo would be perfect. May consider other materials. Thanks for your help. Alex. Quote
Soshin Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 Hi Alex, One thing I have noticed from practicing a style of Ko-Ryu Batto for 7 odd years is that my fuchi is well worn on my iai-to. Is this likely due to my left hand touching it when I grip the handle with two hands. For my next and final practice sword I would want a plain and strong fuchi likely made out of patinated iron. I don't think a shakudo fuchi would cut it in my honest opinion. Quote
Alex A Posted July 1, 2013 Author Report Posted July 1, 2013 Hi David, this isn't for martial arts, its for a late muromachi katana. To be honest, I have shelved the idea, but the idea just keeps coming back like a boomerang :D. I suppose if I came across the correct parts I might one day follow it through. Alex. Quote
