LostDutchman Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Hi gang! What can you tell me about these menuki? Thank you! Matt Quote
b.hennick Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Ithink that they need a gentle cleaning. Use a well used toothbrush - no toothpaste and some gnetle soap. I use unsented kids foam soap. I put it on the toothbrush work gently to clean out the dirt and dry completely with a soft cloth. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Matt, I think they are nice but they seem to be cast copies. Quote
LostDutchman Posted June 18, 2013 Author Report Posted June 18, 2013 Thanks! I wanted to get them checked out as they came off of a sword with an mid edo blade and tsuba in WWII mounts. Matt Quote
Brian Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 I'm almost certain these are not cast copies. Look like perfectly ok menuki to me. Can see where the posts were removed. I vote genuine, and quite ok imho. Brian Quote
LostDutchman Posted June 19, 2013 Author Report Posted June 19, 2013 Thanks Brian I appreciate the input. Do you think these would be from that same mid-late edo period? Quote
Brian Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 Matt, Like Mino and Bungo and Shoami...I think mid-Edo is the go-to era for all fittings if they don't have any traits that point to a certain time period specifically. So yes...I think we would call this mid to late edo, although that is based purely on the fact that nothing specifically points to anything later or earlier  Hard to guess...there aren't any techniques here that stand out. runagmc Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 It's unusual how they are like perfect mirror images except for the back leg and tail... it would take some skill to do that by hand... Quote
runagmc Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 After flipping one of the menuki, it seems they aren't as perfect of mirror images as I thought... still pretty close though... Quote
