What can you tell me about these menuki?

Ithink that they need a gentle cleaning. Use a well used toothbrush - no toothpaste and some gnetle soap. I use unsented kids foam soap. I put it on the toothbrush work gently to clean out the dirt and dry completely with a soft cloth.

I think they are nice but they seem to be cast copies.

I wanted to get them checked out as they came off of a sword with an mid edo blade and tsuba in WWII mounts.

I'm almost certain these are not cast copies. Look like perfectly ok menuki to me. Can see where the posts were removed.

I vote genuine, and quite ok imho.

Do you think these would be from that same mid-late edo period?

Like Mino and Bungo and Shoami...I think mid-Edo is the go-to era for all fittings if they don't have any traits that point to a certain time period specifically.

So yes...I think we would call this mid to late edo, although that is based purely on the fact that nothing specifically points to anything later or earlier :lol:

Hard to guess...there aren't any techniques here that stand out.

It's unusual how they are like perfect mirror images except for the back leg and tail... it would take some skill to do that by hand...

After flipping one of the menuki, it seems they aren't as perfect of mirror images as I thought... still pretty close though...
