Max C Posted June 17, 2013 Report Posted June 17, 2013 I am helping a local regimental museum to identify some of the swords in their collections. Some of them are Nihonto, and I would be glad if you could help me to identify some of them. The first one is a small tanto with a kanji horimono. Unfortunately the kissaki is broken but it is signed , and interestingly the sageo seems to be recycled from a military gunto tassel. It is very scratched and I could barely make out the hamon or hada. The second one is also a tanto, lavishly decorated, the saya lacquer work is done so that a raised decor representing a dragon is shown. It is also signed, unfortunately a mekugi hana was pierced partly onto one of the characters. The blade exhibits a single bo-hi and has an assymetrical theme to its fittings. The third one is a wakizashi, the blade was cut and is unsigned but the tsuba is signed, part of the yasuri me is still visible. Any information you could give would be very much appreciated. Quote
mywei Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 First mei reads 'Hizen Kuni Tadayoshi", looks like later Tadayoshi mei Not sure about the second one "?Hiro Mitsu" Quote
Max C Posted June 18, 2013 Author Report Posted June 18, 2013 Thank you! As for the second one, its not much clearer but here is another view. http://i42.tinypic.com/33lhtl5.jpg Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 On the blade, a version of Marishiten. (?) See here: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=c ... 80&bih=685 Quote
Max C Posted June 18, 2013 Author Report Posted June 18, 2013 Also realized that some pictures were missing. Second tanto: The tsuba for the wakizashi Quote
Max C Posted June 18, 2013 Author Report Posted June 18, 2013 On the blade, a version of Marishiten. (?) See here: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=c ... 80&bih=685 Thanks Piers! Quote
Max C Posted June 20, 2013 Author Report Posted June 20, 2013 Any other guess on the second tanto or the wakizashi tsuba mei? Quote
runagmc Posted June 20, 2013 Report Posted June 20, 2013 The tanto looks like HIROMITSU (supposed to be Soshu Hiromitsu, but I can't attest to the validity), and the tsuba is Bushu ju MASAKATA... If the Hiromitsu is genuine, and without flaws, it could be fairly valuable... you could try posting some better pics here or try to have an expert view it in person. Actually they should probably all be seen by someone knowledgeable, if possible. It's hard to tell from these pics exactly what they are... Quote
Max C Posted June 21, 2013 Author Report Posted June 21, 2013 Well I wasn't expecting that! Of course the next step would be to show it to an expert, I am would never feel confortable to officially identify this. Could anyone suggest someone able to authenticate this piece? It is located in Quebec City, Canada. Quote
Jacques Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 Hi, On the bottom one (suriage sword) i see gyaku takanoha yasurime, this kind of yasurime is relatively rare and used mainly by Kanenobu and Kanetsugu (Shiga Seki school, Owari province) Quote
Max C Posted June 21, 2013 Author Report Posted June 21, 2013 Thanks! Here are two close ups of this last blade. Quote
Jacques Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 Hi, Hamon seems similar with that of Kanenobu, It could be a good guess. Quote
Max C Posted June 25, 2013 Author Report Posted June 25, 2013 I am raising the question again, is there any expert that anyone could suggest to authenticate these blades and who might be willing to travel to Quebec? Quote
