kelibus Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 Thanks Georgs! There is no note about the officer rang on the tags? or what company he was serviced in? Best regards Claes Quote
george trotter Posted July 18, 2013 Report Posted July 18, 2013 No, it just seems to be his name and address...it is quite common. regards, Quote
Hayabusa Posted December 31, 2013 Author Report Posted December 31, 2013 Just another request for any more tags or labels.. Any for sale would be most welcome Quote
GregN Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 Hi guys, I traded for this blade. It is unsigned without any marks or stamps aside from file marks. To be honest I haven't looked as I'm new to Shin Gunto and waiting for a friend who knows military Nihonto to visit and we will take this apart together. The collector notes say the tag says: “KAU SAKI SHO” (2ND Lieutenant Kausaki) “33 TOKU KON” (unit). The writing is the same on both sides of the wooden tablet. Any information on the unit would be most appreciated. I did Google it but nothing substantive came up. Regards, Greg Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 三三特根 might be the 33 Special Base Unit (naval garrison) stationed at Cebu in the Phillipines. They were responsible for various activities including midget submarines. In Aug '44 they had four type C midget subs HA 81- to 84. HA 78 and 79 arrived in Nov '44. HA 69 and 76 in Dec '44. Either sunk or scuttled. Reports of their actions are unsure against US ships, but, may have had some success. John Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 BTW, 神埼 Kanzaki 少尉 Shoui 2nd lieutenant. A small correction. Although these midget subs were commanded by Lt. (jg) officers I find no mention of Lt. Kanzaki as being a commander of one and he may then be shore based personnel. John Quote
GregN Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 Thanks guys for the further details but I'm sorry to say the sword is an army pattern rather than a naval pattern. Does this make a difference? I have attached some pics of the sword. Greg Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 No. He may have been attached to the unit or any other reason. John Quote
GregN Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 John, I would like to thank you for this input on my sword. I am constantly amazed at the level of expertise on the Forum. Greg Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 Here is a PDF of forces in Cebu City. HQ of 102nd Division (Army) etc. Why the sword may be an army type. John 945PCAC.pdfFetching info... Quote
The_ozzy_samurai Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Hey guys i have a pretty neat surrender tag, overall the swords in outstanding condition, made by kanenori Feb 1943,and the mounts are very rare too, stamps on fittings at base of tsuka, signed scabbard, surrender cloth, even a name or something stiched into tassel, overall very minty the sword never saw combat as he was a 19th Educational Flight Officer,as you can see its been translated by a Japanese officer, This is what i can read: on english side of course, 19th Educational Flight Regiment Sub Lt. Shigeru Ito 234 Shinotaka, Hoiqun i was told they translate names into english in reverse his name could be Ito Shigeru? there is also some other names or something? He trained pilots from what i am told about those Educational Flight Regiments, the scabbard is minty, all high grade fittings still full of colour, blade is as new,no stains or nicks, and by the look of his efforts to mark his sword he really wanted it back oh yeah the tang also has a funny stamp on spine i have never seen before? i believe its fairly rare sword in this condition and with all the markings, also Kanenori is one of the better smiths,im thinking of maybe selling it but have no idea what its worth? i also have the original sword bag issued for that sword, military brown silk bag with tassel's its frail and torn but still its original, Quote
