Marius Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 Gents, while I have the previous owner's attribution of this tsuba, including school and age, I would also like to hear your opinion. The tsuba is iron, of course, there is a nice, wet look to it, granular tekkotsu in the plate and rim. What is your take on it? Dimensions: 7.8cm x 7.9cm x 0.3 cm Quote
runagmc Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 It looks kind of like a fan and a gourd... but that could be way off... Quote
Marius Posted June 10, 2013 Author Report Posted June 10, 2013 Adam, thanks for your opinion regarding the motif, but I was asking about an attribution :D Quote
Higo-san Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 My guess is mid-to late 18th century Hoan due to the design and the - what I believe to see from the photos - Hoan typical tsujime treatment of the surface. Quote
raiden Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 without seeing it in hand....saotome or Heianjo sukashi...... Quote
Soshin Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 Hi Mariusz K., I would need to agree with Mike Y. I would say Saotome School likely Momoyama Period or early Edo Period. This is just my opinion. P.S. I really love the iron on that tsuba. :D Quote
Henry Wilson Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 Hoan would be nice. The black metal and the motif make me think this. However from the pictures, while the metal seems good, it does not seem to be of the quality associated with Hoan. It could be the monitor though :D The condition looks reasonable which could be an indication of age as opposed to quality and I would say from the general feel that it is mid to early Edo. All things considered, I say a later generation Hoan (from around the 4th). I really hope that it is as you don't see much of them about. Quote
Marius Posted June 11, 2013 Author Report Posted June 11, 2013 Gentlemen, many thanks for your opinions. The previous owner's attribution was Heianjo, Momoyama period Quote
christianmalterre Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 Saotome certainly is the best call here in mine eyes... Certainly an good Tsuba which would look very nice if fitted on an nice and simplistic arranged Koshirae. Good find Mariusz! Christian Edit:-mine first guess was Haruta(due the iron and it´s obvious glossiness) Saotome would explain the sharp cuttings... I do like this Tsuba! Quote
