takeda81 Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Hello all , Even if my experience in iai / batto jutsu is limited I was , let's say amazed / schocked , seeing this video from Japan : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=425UoLdwWxo 松山の町にひびく槌音 Go to minute 4.28 and there will be what they call "block cutting" with a shinken... Based on my little knowledge , here are my questions : 1. howe "normal" / often is this in Japan ? specially in a koryu , more or less ( toyama ryu / nakamura ryu ) 2. my feeling was that the block was more cracked in impact , then cut...so what's the point - that the steel is so powerfull ? You can do that with a simple iron pipe. 3. assumming that the shinken is intact after that ... is is normal to put it right back in the saya , with concrete dust on it ? The chiburui (chiburi) was just formal, not enough for cleaning anything ( and is not intented for that) Thanks for your time Cris L. Quote
Alex A Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Hi Cris, im guessing that if he will attempt to cut a breeze block with his sword then he is not too woried about scratches from the dust. If i where him id be ever so slightly concerned about catching something in the eye, an health and safety no no. He didnt cut the block, he cracked it, as you said.. Alex. Quote
hxv Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 What the guy in the video did (concrete block cutting) is pretty ... vulgar as far as martial arts go. Brute force with (seemingly) no mental discipline. Hoanh Quote
ROKUJURO Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Yes, this was a breaking test, not cutting! Interestingly, the blow was not executed with the MONOUCHI. Maybe it would have broken then. I have no doubt that the blade was damaged to an extent. I don't quite understand this kind of test. Quote

drbvac Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Someone stated the blade is probably damaged - I would think destroyed would be a more apt description - I also would think that none of the blades used for these demonstrations are actually old papered blades - please - no, Quote
