cuttingedge59 Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 Hi all, This e-bay seller has a number of tsuba for sale , some signed some not. These listings are some what confusing as looking at some of these items they would seem possibly to be real or just maybe good fakes. What has sent the alarm bells of are two seperate listing that to my eye are the same item ,one with reasonable laquer finish and the other in poor condition. Members thoughts would be appreciated as there is one i like. I have very little experience with fittings so very much a learning process. http://www.ebay.com/itm/D960-ytkg-Japan ... 1c31e1d203 http://www.ebay.com/itm/D962-yjkg-Japan ... 19db1f96dd Many thanks Chris Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 Various lower level fittings. Genuine. John Quote
Grey Doffin Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 I suspect both of those tsuba are fakes. The work is far too crude to have been done by even a lower level Japanese craftsman. Phoney baloney shakudo (black paint) is another red flag. Made yesterday in China. Grey Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 I went to the all items URL and looked at a bunch of things. I looked around and I still think real stuff. John http://www.ebay.com/sch/ensai-so-ken/m. ... 7675.l2562 Quote
b.hennick Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 Not to my taste but I do not see the obviious signs of casting. Can you lead me to the signs? Quote
b.hennick Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 Thanks I do see a line on the mimi of the tsuba. Quote

John A Stuart Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 Those tsuba you linked to are very poor examples. The jizai okimono looks new, not really up on them, however I have bid on a tsuba from this seller that I am confident is real and desirable. We'll see. that tsuba pictured by Nihonto-uk is cast though and worrisome, but, look at some of the others. e-Bay eh? you take your chances. John Quote
Geraint Posted April 21, 2013 Report Posted April 21, 2013 While the first two are pretty low level Nagoya mono, and the second has some questions to be answered about the "paint", neither is really a serious tsuba for the collector. Equally the Jizai mono needs some looking at but as these are by nature tourist pieces what are we expecting? On the other hand everything else looks perfectly genuine, setting aside any judgment about the relative asethetic merits. Look forward to seeing what you come up with John. Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 21, 2013 Report Posted April 21, 2013 Didn't win the tsuba I wanted. It went beyond a comfortable level. John Quote
