Sights in Berlin!

Hi guys!

 

I´m off to Berlin the first weekend of may. Never been there before. Just want to know if there is any interesting to see for a Japanese freak like me.

 

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

Jam, there are a lot of historic treasures to be seen in Berlin. Don't go hunting Japanese stuff and miss the Pergamon Altar, the Ishtar gate, the famous Nefertiti sculpture and so on. I'm just giving some well known examples here, but the collections of the museums locate on the Museum Island in Berlin are really first grade and definitely worth a lot of attention.

 

Also well worth a visit are the Prussian palaces in Potsdam (Sanssouci and so on). I've been to Berlin 4 times (for a total of some 40 days) and every time I found something new to see.

I visited Berlin last year and I can definitely Ost Asiatische Kunst Museum ( Museum of East Asian Art) which has a beautifull Japanese section and a great library with many international books on asian subjects. Sometime they have also nice discounts on their books so only this bookstore is worth alone a visit . Check some of my pictures here : http://isba.bugei.ro/berlin2012.2.htm

Don't get me wrong, the Museum of Asian Art is definitely worth a visit. But it's far from being at par with the Pergamon Museum, unless of course you don't give a rat's ass about the Western civilisation

Been there twice, all i can tell you is that it is good.

Well, well, well. One of those cities that look better after an A-bomb explosion. I know. I lived my first 23 years there.

 

The Pergamon Museum is under permanent reconstruction. So, some parts are closed and some parts are not open. But at least they know, what they are doing. There were some of those rusty Japanese discs with motifs and insciptions. And to make them look better they cleaned all of them with metall brushes. No kidding.

 

Dahlem has got the usual stuff. Nothing special. So, if you look for weapons and armory you will be very disapointed.

 

Two sword dealer live in Berlin. Thomas Schulze; Motzstraße. But the little shop is always closed. Last thing I heard is, that operates now from an appartment.

 

And Udo Drechslel: honto-nihonto.de.

 

Several private collectors live in Berlin and in the outback. But they are very shy. And I think none of them is a member here.

 

I will be in may in Berlin, too. So, maybe we can start something...

Thanks guys for all the useful info. The Ost Asiatische Kunst Museum sounds interesting. I will def take a look at the Nefertiti sculpture. Will have the whole of saturday at least to roam around.

And Uwe, I try to send a PM to You when I arrive. Perhaps we can start something on saturday night

There are lot of interesting places in Berlin - I lived there from 2000 ~ 2003 - but for Japanese sword related items I recommend the autobahn leaving the city  .

You know the slogan: Poor but sexy! Well, nowadays it is just Poor! Or even better just poo.

 

Situation in Berlin got worse. Last year Olaf Guhl died. He had a little shop close to Warschauer Straße. Mainly Martial Arts stuff. But he had a little corner with swords, tsubas, tea bowls and yaris. He collected Osaka Shinto. Udo Drechsel is in Korea and two collectors quit.

 

The museums don't have any good stuff. Due to the fact that it disappered like Keyser Soze. So, you better save your money and follow Guido's advice.

 

But you are in Berlin, so HAVE FUN! And never forget: there is something in the water.
