Drago Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 Hi, I already have the "Facts and Fundamentals" book by Nakahara-sensei. Now I'm looking for one more beginner reference book. Which one would you recommend? Kapp's "The Craft of the Japanese Sword" or Nagayama's "The Connoisseurs Book of Japanese Swords" I know that "Craft" is more about the making and "Connoisseur" is more about schools and history. If possible, I'd like to avoid too many similarities to "Facts". Or if you say none of the above, what else? Thanks. Quote
cabowen Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 If you have only mastered the information in Nagayama and Nakahara's books, you are well on your way. Quote
paulb Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 I would go for both as they contain different information. If I had to choose 1 it would be Nagayama's "The Connoisseurs Book of Japanese Swords" Quote
Lindus Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 Refer to an earlier post and would add Yamanaka's news letters. Quote
Adrian Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 Nagayama's "The Connoisseurs Book of Japanese Swords" will really help you start understanding nihonto. Ask me how I know Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 And rather than The Craft of the Japanese Sword, if you want a book on how they are made, I'd recommend The Art of the Japanese Sword, by the same authors I believe. This newer book covers more material with tons more pictures. To answer your original question: Connoisseur's before Craft. Grey Quote
kuromido Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 A great question and a solid answer. Thanks all! Quote
