Ken-Hawaii Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Sword-Kaifu-school-Koto-period-NBTHK-paper-/321076768532?pt=Asian_Antiques&hash=item4ac1aaaf14 I'm trying to figure out just what the shape of the shinogi-ji is - it almost looks like it has been sharpened along the mune. Any ideas? Ken Quote
Min Lee Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 Novice stab... Unokubi? For whatever reason it doesn't look quite right though... Like it's been ground to that shape after the fact. Perhaps it's just the lighting? Quote
drbvac Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 Well I am pretty sure its not glare as it is in the same place in all pictures but it is funny looking for sure - I have a wakizashi that is tapered in on the june from about 2 inches from the kissaki back several inches and then goes back out again - not as close to the end as this and - it just looks different but I have no doubt thats what it is supposed to look like Quote
hxv Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 Ken, I'm sorry for posting this on your thread, but it fits in with your theme. What in heaven's name is this shape? http://www.ebay.com/itm/NB-Signed-Japan ... 3a7eaff46b Hoanh Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted February 23, 2013 Author Report Posted February 23, 2013 No problem, Hoanh. Kill two birds with one stone this way! Ken Quote
Veli Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 What in heaven's name is this shape? Hoanh Looks like Satsuma-age to me (= counter shortening) Veli Quote
runagmc Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 Ken, I would call that unokubi zukuri... and I agree with Veli, the second sword posted has been reshaped after the kissaki broke... Quote
NihontoEurope Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 Hello, I have an Ubu Satsuma Nagamaki, this could be a shortened one. /Martin Quote
Thekirsh Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 I think this sword is strange for a few reasons 1.Whats left of the shinogi ji appears to have very course hada, was the mune/shinogi ji reshaped to remove ugly open grain? 2.The reshaped mune is uneven 3.The colour of the nakago is very red, maybe the lighting but?
