I’m not sure if I can do this but I’d like to re-enter my katana from an earlier post but have taken some better photos

I received some useful information but I’d like to be a bit more specific and confine my request to a possible style and an approximate date

It is signed Nagamitsu

I know it will not excite many NMB members but I intend to keep this one, manly for sentimental reasons.

I’m considering having it polished but I realise it may not be worth the cost

Thank you Uwe G

I really struggle over these katana

I've been guided to various themes from members of the NHM (I'm very grateful) but due to inexperience I just don't see it yet

Maybe one day :?

I didn't even think I was going to grt a reply so I was very pleased to hear your comments

It is possible that my old eyes do not work correctly, but while the NAKAGO seems to have some age (or was made to look so) the HAMON on the pictures does not look convincing to me. I cannot see any activity and my first impression was that of an etched HAMON, not even artificially polished.

Looking closely at it or under magnification, is there NIE or NIOI to be seen?

Dear Greg,

I think Uwe is tactfully telling you that your sword is not signed by THE Nagamitsu, and it's not worth the cost of polish (from a monetary point of view, of course).

Uwe: Please correct me if I am misinterpreting your post.

Hello,

As you can see on the image and on the chisel strokes:

The NAGA character was probably original and the third character made with another tool at another time. The second character was removed hours before the third.

EDIT: Looking some more at the image...there could be one character below the NAGA.

I accept that it is not the Nagamitsu but I was really interested a possible date

Also the comment about the re-polish is fine by me

The tactful comment was nice but all these comments still move me forward and an honest opinion was what I was looking for

I will check tomorrow for another character

Again all comments are appreciated

Grev,

As far as age goes, I would hazard a guess.

The patina on the nakago places the sword in the koto period. The shape and size don't look Kamakura or Nanbokucho. So, by elimination, we have Muromachi as Uwe already wrote.

Hi Grev,

if you want to keep the sword for sentimal reasons, then don´t do anything. A sword end of muromachi unsigned is worth about 3.000 till 5.000 EUR max. Gimei is 3.000 EUR max. A polishing in europe would cost appr. 1.200 EUR. In Japan definitly more. And you would put money in the sword that you never get back. And so: polishing is expensive.

Keep the sword as it is.

Greetings

Uwe G.

:thanks:

I have looked at the hamon and I can’t see any nie or any interesting activity in the hamon.

The surface may have a burl like structure but as it is so indistinct I can not be sure

My previous post stated that this was bought from the son of the officer (80 years old and still going strong) to whom it was surrendered to in Burma.

He was told it was a family sword but I know this could mean anything.

I do not believe this to be an etched hamon but an honest piece with some dispute over the mei and it will not excite a true collector

Many thanks for all the comments and agree about not having it polished

I quite liked the suggestion of creating a window

Was the person you suggested in the UK

If not then is there someone in the UK who can be recommended to do this 'window'

Looks like the hamon is ok and not etched. Tony Norman is in the UK you can contact him on:

If you send it to Tony he will be able to tell you if its worth polishing or not.

Before you consider the cost of a polish or window, I'd suggest that you get get a good uchiko ball or powder and spend a a number of hours uchikoing the blade. There is no yokote to be seen, so you don't have to worry about erasing that. Here are some links to some of my previous posts on this subject:

search.php?keywords=power+uchiko&terms=all&author=Nihonto+Chicken&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

Progress will be slow (which is actually a good thing), but after a few hours whatever activity is present will start to show itself. With enough work, even hada-less mill steel blades with essentially no hataraki will still take on a somewhat pleasing velvet like appearance.
