Hello all,

I have had an old tsuka in the past that was deteriorated silk there where small triangle shaped paper under the wrap, is this still practiced today as I've watched tsuka being wrapped on youtube but not sure the paper method was used.

Still in use as Jean says. However, there are 11 ways to wrap a tsuka and not all use the paper triangles to pack the tsuka ito. If you are referring to the most common way, Morohinerimaki, then paper packing is and should be used.

If you are thinking of trying to re wrap your own tsuka, give it some careful thought. It is better done professionally. If however you are determined to try then at least find out how it is done. Its not as easy as it might look, tension is critical and the little paper triangles are folded a very specific way, using a specific type of paper, and are wet when they are first applied to the tsuka beneath the tsuka ito. There are quite a few less than obvious little ways of doing it correctly, and the finishing knots are not quite as simple as they appear. You wont really learn anything from watching UTube. Find a publication on the subject to get an idea of how to proceed. Or, get it done by a professional. Its not that expensive and the finished job will be better than even your best effort can ever hope to be.

Hi Peter,

this paper is also added for protecting the ito from getting scuffed by the "same".

I tried to do tsuka maki my self, with all my efforts and all the best materials and information.

The result was not realy satisfying, the origami papers were to thick and the shape not realy ok, enough to full an amateur maybe.

In the end it was expensive and waist of time (the session took me the hole night with a lot of swetting, no joke).

I have to say I did it without clips and practised many times with shoe laces before.

I think it is possible to do, just not for once in life time, must be a kind of hobby than.

Greetings!
