Curran Posted February 14, 2013 Report Posted February 14, 2013 Don't do anything at this stage. Get a beater tsuba or two w/ a bit of rust off ebay and buy some ivory sticks (usually busted up piano keys). Google and pull up "Jim Gilbert tsuba" website on cleaning rust off iron. Then practice on the beater tsuba. I wouldn't bother with waxing like Jim Gilbert mentions. Definitely definitely definitely remember: LESS is MORE You have some rust spots that needed attended eventually, but _aren't_ a crushing priority. Wait until you have a better feel for such work. You have what looks to be a very nice original koshirae. Better to slightly under-do care on it than over do it. Ensuite dragonfly koshirae are *not* that common, and it is sad that Sachiko Yamauchi Prough passed away last year: http://www.ny-naginata.org/yamauchi/ She was a good friend and great martial artist known as "The Tombo" (dragonfly) She would really have liked your koshirae. Please take good care of it. Quote
christianmalterre Posted February 14, 2013 Report Posted February 14, 2013 Dear Pepe, this is certainly an nice to have Koshirae-"En Suite"-(Well done!) Where are you situated? (reason i do ask is simple-you very certainly do have collectors near to you who will, and certainly could give you an very sophisticated answer on your´s question here) Generally spoken-Hey Guy´s-please do your´s homework! You do buy(or accumulate?)things you do know very well,or not(?)-or maybe(?)....(doesn´t matter)... Such please,do browse this forum(FIRST!) -you´ll find "Plenty" of answers to similar posts already done, questions asked ect.ect...(?) Question: is it resulting(thosedays)really "That hard" to do an first step in selfstudy first???? Sorry Pepe... It´s just getting time we all do change an bit the "niveau" of this section...(at least me would wish) got several "complaints" from old members here(in personal correspondance)who all would wish we could discuss rather significant things, without getting thrown away to the basics... Critics certainly welcomed if not even pleased...it´s just getting bit monotonous this way it actually works...(Not?)? Hope you don´t mind with me now! You but have an nice Koshirae here! Congratulations! Christian Edit: (Thank´s Curran -did not see your´s post before...)... Quote

docliss Posted February 15, 2013 Report Posted February 15, 2013 I am surprised that no member has taken up Pepe's suggestion of WD40. This will completely remove any existing patination from a tsuba, and is a definite NO NO! John L. Quote
Alex A Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 Personally i wouldnt worry to much about it, it isnt going to rust away and probably will be fine if you just left it alone and give it a wipe with a dry cloth now and again. If it really bothers you i would use a fine toothbrush with alcohol to remove any loose rust particles (Not rubbing excessively), then wipe with a thin layer of gun oil (almost wiping it all off again),the iron will look darker and in my opinion slightly better than it is now, the patina will change no matter what you use on it, i do this with some iron meteorites with a similar patina , it simply stops the risk of further oxidation problems, allthough if stored in a dry room that shouldnt be a problem anyway!, the original patina will come back sooner or later .Im sure some folk will dissagree, but i wouldnt pay for something it doesnt need, it is old, i think sometimes people want there old items to look new, too much.....
