Adrian Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 How can someone bid 2500+ $ based on these photos? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samurai-Sword-1 ... 3f21af79b1 No papers, polish gone, no signature, very simple saya in bad condition, nothing to write home about the tsuka either. Is the tsuba worth 2500$ or am I missing something really important about the katana itself? Considering the fact that the seller is offering 14 days money back guarantee maybe someone (actually some people) is/are willing to play a free lottery?
Jiro49 Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 I was curious myself...? You gotta love Ebay
Adrian Posted February 7, 2013 Author Report Posted February 7, 2013 The only thing that comes to mind is that the katana "might have" some potential that requires a much better inspection and that a few guys are willing to overbid just for the chance to check it out (and then 99% return to the seller).
Jean Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 A picture of the saya should be provided as the tsuka is in handachi mounting. Nevertheless the tsuba is not of handachi style, as well as the koiguchi.
Adrian Posted February 7, 2013 Author Report Posted February 7, 2013 The saya is visible in the 6th, the 8th, the 9th and the 12th photo, but all the photos are of very poor quality, either the seller has no experience with Nihonto, as he claims, or he just made some crappy photos on purpose, to let the potential victims build up their hopes.
Jean Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 Ok I saw them. Koshirae is made of bits and odds.
NihontoEurope Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 Jean, Can you show an example of a "typical" handachi tsuba? /Martin
Brian Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 Simple fact that the bidders are taking their chances that the story about the Hon'ami opinion is fact, and if true, then the sword would be quite decent. It's a long shot, but if ppl have the money, sometimes it pays off. Not the way for a beginner to go though. Since this is an active auction and nothing to talk about here, I don't want to influence the price, locking this one down. Check the blade carefully though, especially quality of any horimono and shape vs purported age. Brian
