Hiya! I recently impulse bought a tsuba from Japan. Its supposed to be an edo period tsuba in a style that I find to be my favourite. I saw a tsuba like this a while ago and missed buying it so when I saw this one I got excited and bought it. If any of you guys know more about this I would love your input!

Nope. Need to read and study more I'm afraid.

This one may be cast and much later. That seppadai has that look to it, including striations and lack of symmetry.

Hi,

Another indication for cast is the lower part of the tsuba on the photo. You can see something that seems crude and unfinished. A failure during the cast process that won't be like this in a carve tsuba.

Hiya Cielmerlion,

Please don't follow your impulses there are people out there that will take advantage of them. Knowledge and saving your money are your true friends. Please follow the web links above or below (my website) to learn and search this forum. What you have done is a common mistake one that I have made myself along time ago.

As for your tsuba I fully concur with what has been said. It is a poor cast reproduction likely from the Showa Period (circa 1920-1989).

Yours truly,

David Stiles

Ceilmerlion,

Interesting username, ~ HeavenSeaLion ?

While it is fine with a username, etiquette has long been to at least sign with real first name. Some add an initial to distinguish themselves if other members have the same first name.

Welcome to the Nihonto Message Board.

I am sorry, but your tsuba is a cast one.

Thanks for the help guys! Sorry about the name, for some reason I thought that it automatically signed it since it asked for it. I pretty much figured that it was cast for the reasons you said. I had seen one like this a few months ago and fell in low with the cloud design. If it didn't have the obvious casting errors I would probably keep it. That said, had anyone ever seen another tsuba of this design antique or otherwise? I've scoured the Internet for one and have found nothing.

Again, thanks for all the helpful replies! My pseudonym is one I've used for years. I've never actually come across anyone else using it so wherever you see it it's me.
