jamesicus Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 What are the flowers/stems/leaves on this Tsuba please? I imagined cherry tree, but the leaves are wrong to me. Thanks, James Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 It can be tough sometimes, but, plum and cherry are similar being very closely related. John Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 Bushu tsuba, changed my mind leaning towards plum, but heavily serrated leaf edge at least to me suggests cherry. plum Quote
jamesicus Posted December 11, 2012 Author Report Posted December 11, 2012 Thank you very much, John - I do appreciate the difficulty in differentiating the foliage/flowers. James Quote
jamesicus Posted December 11, 2012 Author Report Posted December 11, 2012 Bushu tsuba, changed my mind leaning towards plum, but heavily serrated leaf edge at least to me suggests cherry. And thank you, Franco. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about fittings, but I am finding out I actually know very little. It is a humbling - but rewarding - experience. Added: I did wade through the 28 pages (64 items per page) of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Tsuba collection (http://www.mfa.org/search/collections?keyword=tsuba) this afternoon - a very enlightening but exhausting adventure for me! And thank you for the most excellent Cherry blossom image, Franco. James Quote
kunitaro Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 It is called 葉桜 Ha-zakura. 葉 Ha=Leaves 桜 Sakura=Zakura. A few weeks after peak of Cherry blossom, the flower start to fall and fresh leaves start to grow. It is expression of "the end of spring the beginning of Summer". And Yes, It is Bushu tsuba late-end of Edo period. Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 It seems humbling is par for the course when it comes to nihonto, while confident with a Bushu bid, I'm hoping it's in fact correct. Thanks for that image, Kunitaro san, the leaves confirm Cherry. Quote
