gun addict Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 A local seller of a family sword has contacted me and unfortunately the sword is partically rusted and missing the habaki. The tang interests me though cause i have never seen a tang with so many remounts/nakago ana. What can you scholars tell me about the age of this particular blade and if its worth the $500 the seller is asking? Thanks http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... ing021.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... ing020.jpg Quote
cabowen Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 Hard to say given the poor photos but I doubt it is later than shinto and most likely koto.....I would roll the dice- odds are it is worth much more than $500.... Quote
gun addict Posted November 27, 2012 Author Report Posted November 27, 2012 I'll go take a look saturday, the sword's condition and the rust is an obvious turn off and the 2 hour it would take to get drive there dosnt help either Quote
runagmc Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 Hi Timothy, In my opinion there's no point in buying a sword with this kind of corrosion unless you're ready and willing to go through the long and expensive process of having it restored - that's if it even will polish out. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like there might be some bad pitting... Maybe worth it, maybe not, but probably not the best purchase unless you have the experience to judge it's potential...
